Did Renteria get a fair shake?
No, he was fucked by an evil employer without being given a chance. 50%  50%  [ 15 ]

No, they aren't. That's hilarious.

Why? They've said nothing at all. They've never said he was fired. They never said they were chasing Maddon. So far Renteria is the opening day manager.

But the truth is nobody believes that. Unless you do. Then you are the only person in the world that believes that. The rest of us realize Maddon is the opening day manager and think the Cubs should just get it over with, so that Renteria still has his choice of options for the upcoming season.

Maybe they'll keep them both and try the College of Coaches thing again. I bet jimmypasta would like that.

I'm saying they haven't announced anything. This is truth. Was there this much certainty over the Girardi hire?

I'm pretty sure that I said with certainty there would be no way he would choose the Cubs over the Yankees

Literally- it does not. When was the last time a team negotiated with a guy while letting a manager dangle in the wind? No, it really doesn't happen. When guys get fired or replaced, everyone knows it's coming and why it happened. This is just a whim. And most teams aren't run on the whims of grown up fantasy baseball guys. How many chances does your Guru need to get it right anyway? That'll be two bad hires. When does He get held responsible?

Robin Ventura can't be fired for 5 more years or this thread is moot.

This thread doesn't exist if Ricky was fired on Friday.

By definition, it was a bad hire if you have to fire him. My opinion is immaterial.

No.

He was the best candidate for the job, at the time. He is maybe no longer the best man for the job. Since the Cubs organization cannot have two managers, you go with the one you think can benefit your organization the most.

In business, the same thing happens. Instead of firing the incumbent, sometimes you can "create" a position for him. Or you can change his role within the company...maybe move him to a different department. "Restructuring."

Can't work like that in baseball though.

I would be content if Ricky Renteria is back in 2015. I would be content if Maddon is the guy.

And I appreciate my team looking at every single avenue possible to strengthen the organization going forward. If they are not considering Maddon, and did not think to consider Maddon, then they are not doing their jobs.

...if the Cubs currently have a starting third baseman... do they not sign a third baseman in the off-season since the current third baseman is still under contract? I mean...he is employed by your organization currently... there is no way you can replace him with a free agent until you release him...then and only then can you think about other third basemen?

A team can have two third baseman. They can't have two managers.

First of all, I said starting third baseman. And if we want to be nit-picky, I'm pretty sure every team has a third baseman...and then a guy who can fill in a third but is generally a utility guy. You don't have two guys that only play third base. There may be exceptions, but they are certainly far and few between.

And a manager is considered a coach, and every team has multiple coaches.

Just as a job switch from a manager to a coach would be demotion, so to would being the starting third baseman to becoming a bench player.

Are you looking for a semantic argument? The manager is a management position. He's not talent. Like I said, it isn't anything like replacing an outfielder with a younger guy or replacing Wally Pipp with Lou Gehrig. It's much closer to replacing Scorehead with another sales manager.

Replacing an on field manager - in the hopes of producing more on field wins - is a sports decision.
It's not semantics. It's common sense.

Bad.
