The Cubs have signed left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada to a one-year, Major League contract, the team announced. The deal is worth $4MM, and another $2MM available in incentives, MLB.com’s Carrie Muskat reports (Twitter link). Wada is represented by the Octagon Agency.

Wada, 33, finally got his first taste of Major League action last season, posting an impressive 3.25 ERA, 7.4 K/9 and 3.00 K/BB rate over 69 1/3 IP (13 starts) with the Cubs. Following a distinguished nine-year career in Japan, Wada signed a two-year, $8.15MM deal with the Orioles in December 2011, though he never threw as much as a pitch for the O’s thanks to Tommy John surgery.

Fuck, shit, bitch, piss. Why would Theo re-sign Wada who could be nice swingman or LOOGy? That improves the Cubs!

I know Bryant is coming but do you guys think the Cubs should resign Valbuena?

I hated him at first but he's grown on me a lot. He'd be a very good bench guy, fill in at 2nd or 3rd and pinch hit against righties.

Luis is alright with me.

I agree but he might be asking for starter type money.

Luis Valbuena is arb eligible for the next two years and will not be a free agent until 2017. Last year he made 1.710 million.

No. Bryant must start from Day 1.

Maybe?

The Padres cleared a spot on their 40-man roster today by designating left-hander Eric Stults for assignment.

Stults earned $2.75 million this season while posting a 4.30 ERA and 111/45 K/BB ratio in 176 innings over 32 starts. The 34-year-old was due a raise in arbitration this winter, so the Padres ultimately decided that he wasn’t worth it, especially considering the numbers of options they have for the back-end of their rotation in 2015.

Stults owns a 3.87 ERA over 79 starts and four relief appearances during his time in San Diego, but that translates to an ERA+ of 88. In other words, life outside of PETCO Park is unlikely to be kind to him.

He probably wont.

Id sign Valbuena. Good player and a guy who can play a couple positions. No reason to let him go.

These 12 dude got qualifying offers:
•Max Scherzer (Tigers)
•Victor Martinez (Tigers)
•David Robertson (Yankees)
•Melky Cabrera (Blue Jays)
•James Shields (Royals)
•Hanley Ramirez (Dodgers)
•Pablo Sandoval (Giants)
•Nelson Cruz (Orioles)
•Russell Martin (Pirates)
•Francisco Liriano (Pirates)
•Michael Cuddyer (Rockies)
•Ervin Santana (Braves)

With free agency open my wishlist is thus:
Jon Lester
Justin Masterson or Gavin Floyd
Brandon McCarthy

I like the idea of Russell Martin but I do not like his career year offensively at 32 in a contract year. I see Brian McCann part 2.

I wonder if Wieters is available. The Orioles survived his absence.

I don't understand why there isn't more noise about signing Santana. I think he will perform every bit as well as Shields moving forward.

Scherzer, Martinez, and Cruz are the only ones I would want from that list.

Martinez is strictly a DH.
My sneaky play for Scherzer is St. Louis and Arizona. AZ just signed a new TV contract and Scherzer is a STL kid.
Cruz would be cool though I feel he fits better in the AL. He's going to be 35 and plays poor defense.

I think he was hurt and they believe Bosio can get him back on track.

Theo pretty clearly described Lester and Martin this morning on M&H, without naming them.

It was also interesting to hear him say that he prefers the evil of overspending on top arms, rather than giving up assets to acquire via trade. Means Lester has to be more intriguing since you aren't losing a pick.

1 Lester
1 of Masterson or Floyd
1 McCarthy

My 1st post was clearer but cockgobbler Coztansa had a ton of trouble understanding.

It is very hard to disagree with your baseball acumen when you use such words as "cockgobbler" "dipshit", and "cockgobbling." As I said, just brilliant stuff from you here the last few days. You are a true baseball sage.

I find it very unlikely that they sign 3 pitchers this offseason.

They have collected a lot of arms in the last couple years.

I would bet on 1 big name and maybe 1 more.

I think its more likely that they use Addison Russel or some other young talent to trade for a pitcher rather than sign 2 or 3 guys,

Theo literally said he would rather overspend than trade away assets this morning. But maybe.

Well unless they plan to move Castro or Russell to 2nd, wouldn't it make sense to trade one of them? And even if if you trade one guy or many guys, you are giving up something to get something.
