His pops is Big Brown if you remember him from the 2005 Derby. Watch the video below (he's PP #5), he's already so tall at the age of 2 that he made the other horses look like quarterhorses. Dortmund's owner is also the same owner as Bayern, who won the BC Classic two weekends ago, and maybe you soccer nerds can explain the Dortmund/Bayern names. Hoping they put him in the Cash Call Futurity next month. His first race looked awesome, though. The fact that one site already has his 2015 Derby odds at 30-1 after one MSW race should let you know how others feel about him.

edited to talk about Derby prep races.

Picking a Derby horse 6 months before the Derby is rather stupid

I agree Walt...but I don't think there's nothing wrong with dropping $10-20 on a horse with future odds in the triples....Cali Chrome was 300-1 originally, and 30-1 as late as March.

Speaking of California Chrome, they just announced that's he's preparing to try grass in the Hollywood Cup on 11/29. If all goes well, he may try the Arlington Million next year. I'd definitely come out for that.

Seriously, this colt is big, awkward, and green. I'd be trying to beat him next time out.

Actually I just changed my mind...knowing his namesake, he'd probably take an early lead, fuck around with the other horses, and let one of them come back and beat him.

arsenal beat dortmund 2-0 today! so that means in their champions league group dortmund and arsenal are both through to the knockout round of 16, but with dortmund sitting on 12pts/+10GD and arsenal at 10pts/+4GD dortmund would have to lose to anderlecht while arsenal beats galatasaray(sp?) in order to have arsenal finish atop the group (and most likely end up with a much more do-able opponent in the round of 16, as opposed to their usual 2nd place finish that gets them, say, barcelona and buyern munich 2x in the last 3 seasons IIRC.

right now dortmund, widely considered to be the 2nd team in a 2 team league (1.bundesliga) is sitting in something like 2nd-to-last-place and a scant 2pts above dead last in 1.bundesliga! they're in the freaking relegation zone! i have no idea if anybody in the UEFA champions league era has topped their group while being in the relegation zone of their domestic league, but i'm willing to bet that the answer is no!

arsenal's having a disappointing season, but nothing quite like what jurgen klopp and the bvb boys are having over there in old nazi territory. jurgen klopp is one of those guys that many would like to see succeed arsene wenger @ arsenal if/when he goes (he might end up pulling a harold washington at the rate he's going) but if dortmund manages to finish like 10th or something and doesn't even crack the europa league, aka pulls a >moyes (altho >moyes did take a creaky/aging PL-champion team and personally assist them down to 7th place out of any an all european competition, but hey he got a community shield which i still think should be renamed the david moyes memorial shield!) ----- well then what's gonna happen with klopp? of course arsene signed a big ol 3yr deal after the triumphant FA cup haul for arsenal year (if it's not a mickey mouse trophy it's at least a bugs bunny trophy i figure) so who knows if arsene would step down if arsenal ends up.... *shudders* playing football on thursdays (europa league, aka the 4th-6th or 5th-7th place teams in most euro leagues, chock full of all kinds of teams from, say, belgian leagues you've never heard of) then maybe arsene steps down?

still tho, arsenal's sitting not just pretty but elle macpherson back in the day fine compared to where dortmund is this year.

so yeah, i hope dortmund runs well and can pick up the DFB pokal derby otherwise they're going to potentially have a LOOOOOOOONNNNNGGG calendar year in teh year of our lorde 2015.

I'm not sure he's Baffert's best horse.

Is he going in the Los Al race?

That would be my guess as that's the next graded stakes race in the KY Derby Prep schedule. If not there, then the Sham at SA, where he's does all of his workouts.

3-4 Exacta to anyone reading this. Will be the easiest money you've ever made. May not pay much though.

I also read too that Dom The Bomb is going to Florida....there hasn't been an Illinois bred horse that's made it to the Derby since Western Playboy in 1989. Dom The Bomb may have a chance.

That's kind of a weak field going for all that cash.

He needed every inch to get up by a nose. Looked like he might be off on his left side.

spmack, who was that chick with the giant cans interviewing Baffert?

Dortmund did it, but yeah you're right. Needs to tighten up his turns. Hope to see Mr. Z and Firing Line hook up again with Dortmund in the future.

Yeah I had seen someone posted that race on their twitter feed last week. Do you think the owners will switch to a more popular trainer? I never heard of Laura Wohlers. Especially if he runs at the Fairgrounds, that's Amoss or Rudy Rodriguez country.

Good call JORR, and for now, it appears that Runhappy should be the favorite and Laura Wohlers still is the trainer, but there's a rider switch to Shaun Bridgmohan.
