Cutler deal could save Bears money

Adam Schefter [ARCHIVE] ESPN | November 16, 2014

The Chicago Bears are not as exclusively tied to quarterback Jay Cutler as his seven-year contract would indicate.Greg M. Cooper/USA TODAY SportsThe Bears would save $12.5 million against the salary cap if they were able to trade Jay Cutler after the season. The Bears could trade Cutler after this season and actually save $12.5 million against the salary cap, a review of his contract shows.Cutler's $15.5 million salary for next season is guaranteed, based on a review of the deal, but there might be another team willing to take it on, relieving the Bears if the team made the decision to try to trade him.And based on talks with a handful of teams around the league, there would be interest in Cutler, according to multiple league sources.Any team willing to trade for Cutler would also take on the $16 million of guarantees for the 2016 season.

Uh, no ... didn't they just give whosits a 3 year deal right before he got injured? Or do I need to start drinking again?

Trade him to Washington for RG3. RG3 sucks but is passable for a season and is cheaper.

The Jets. Maybe Buffalo. Houston probably makes the most sense.

You think the Jets will trade for anybody. Probably true but still funny.

Trading the best QB in the 100 year history of the team would be stupid.

The last team to trade Jay Cutler did ok.

Disagree. He hasn't done well at all in Tampa Bay.

Trading for the best QB in the 100 year history of the team ended up pretty stupid too.

I also hope the Bears don't trade him. My hope is that he goes on a 2nd half tear to help them finish 8-8 and save Trestman's job.

I would be on board with it if the Bears signed 1 of the top 10 greatest QBs of all time. Just trading him just to be trading him doesn't make sense to me.

I think we forget how awful our QBs have been.

That's high praise for Tebow or Orton

I think it's more a case of remembering that that shouldn't be a factor in whether or not to keep Cutler.

The argument about how bad our QBs used to be has no bearing on anything. The league is different now. Successful QB's are different. Teams are built differently.

You know what I remember well? Jay Cutler getting his ass handed to him every single time we play Green Bay.

This would be a good time to point out once again that the Grossman/Orton era had a higher winning percentage than the Cutler era.

The Bears would be thrilled to find a team willing to trade a bag of balls for Jay. I'm not sure there will be any teams interested though...

We didn't want them either. Never mind the fact they didn't have any good offensive players other than Thomas Jones and Forte.
