Can't fault the Cubs for not going that many years. Too bad.

I think Cubs fans should feel similar to how Sox fans felt about Martinez about this news. I think they dodged a bullet.

However, this now brings up the fact that the Theo has been unable to land his big fish three years running.

I don't even get the troll. If he wanted to pay it he could have. He chose not to.

I wouldnt say they were in big time on Tanaka

Anyway, I dont think you call this a failure. I mean, you have to be reasonable with the money lest you end up with a Soriano situation of bidding against yourself

If Cubs were offering like 4 years for 40, then yes, criticize away. 4 for 64 was a very fair offer based on the market. Not offering the 5th is a baseball decision that I completely agree with.

These are my thoughts. The Cubs offered him a great deal. The Blue Jays went beyond that.

By year 5 of that ( if that long) theres going to be a broken down cant hit, oft injured catcher owed 17 million. Great no-sign.

I don't understand the criticism of him. Why not Wellington? He's decent...

You guys do know the teams who get the guys everyone wants are the teams that overpay a little? You think Lester is just going to waltz into Chicago on a team friendly deal?

The Cubs will keep whiffing on their big prizes because their ownership is eyes-deep in debt from bulldozing an iconic building and won't sign off on anythinh.

Four years and $64M was already overpaying. Five years and $82M is simply dumb.

I feel like if the Cubs paid the up to 5/82 you'd criticize that, too

Am I wrong?

How's that been working for the Jays.

The key is only overpaying when you really want to. Not for every guy you like. Seems pretty simple.

Lets withhold judgement until we see what the Cubs payroll next year ends up being. If it ends up top 8 like it should be then letting him walk is fine.

I must've missed where the White Sox are so set at catcher? Why isn't Jerry's money available for a clear upgrade at catcher? Why couldn't Hahn match or beat the 82/5 bargain?

That's pretty poor logic. The reason they didn't sign him wasn't because of this year, it was because of the 5th.

How much would they have to spend to get into top eight?

Edit: Last year 136million was 8th place. I think they have 42 on the books right now. So they'd have to spend 94milliion.
