Those Lester rumors kinda make sense, yes? Lackey is gone next year, Garcia a question, Martinez a question. Wacha/Lester/Waino would suck. A lot.

Following Mozeliak and the current regime's track record of gamesmanship... I have little belief they actually intend to acquire Lester.. more just trying to make the up-and-coming divisional threat's attempts to rebuild/retool as difficult as possible.

Will he take a flyer on a guy like Anderson or Floyd? Are there prospects on the way up? What if Martinez can't handle the starting gig? Kelly and Miller were decent 4th/5th (and many better outings too). Well, I guess Jaime is the injury wildcard?e

Gavin? Floyd?
If you were a rival GM of Epstoyer, wouldn't you try to drive the price up on any potential acquisition they were linked to?

I think the Cardinals need 1 one starter unless there's a prospect in the wings (I don't know) as insurance.

Right now, starters 6-9 are Marco Gonzales (MLB pen), Tyler Lyons, John Gast, Tim Cooney. You probably never heard of these guys which is the point... not a lot of experience there. They will bring in someone, not at Lester prices though. Ervin Santana was still available in spring training last year, no reason to think there won't be someone of that ilk early next year

Marco Gonzalez. My guy! Just give the ball to him 30 times get out of his way and let him work his Tom Glavine like magic.

Now, to man that hole we have in RF

Carlos Gonzalez is said to be on the block. There are lesser 1-2 year options that could be brought in like Cuddyer or Torii Hunter. I suppose either of those guys could also spell Big City from time to time vs. LHP at first. I aqctually like Torii as a clubhouse guy, and we know Matheny loves his "chemistry".

We could also go internal with a shuffling of Piscotty, Jay, Bourjos, and Grichuk between center and right, but I have seen zero evidence that Magic Mike knows how to deploy a platoon situation properly.

Heyward would cost quite a bit (but less than CarGo), and Giancarlo would probably cost the moon. Marlin are said to be trying to extend him, but I'm not sure why he would stay there.

But not impossible...

Who said this?

Quote:
In reality, they’re a powerhouse. The Cardinals are the standard in a lot of ways. They’ve built an incredibly healthy baseball organization and a thriving, robust business operation and they combine those things really well. I don’t think they’ve reached their potential yet. I think there isn’t a player in baseball that they couldn’t go get if they wanted to. If they sensed a threat and they wanted to put their foot on the gas I think it’s almost unlimited what they could do.’"

"I could talk all day about the Cardinals and how much we hold them in high regard. That’s a fantastic franchise. They have been for the better part of a century. They do extremely well from a baseball standpoint, and from a revenue standpoint. That’s probably the last organization in baseball that needs that kind of (an) annual gift. Because it’s not necessarily the type of thing that they need, given their performance on the field and off the field. They do a fantastic job. It just doesn’t seem like something they need at this point."

Director of Scouting Dan Kantrovitz is returning to Oakland to rejoin forces with Billy Beane. He has been named the new Assistant General Manager of the Oakland Athletics, replacing Farhan Zaidi.

I really hope he has a successful career, and can land a spot as a GM. Really smart guy, I hope his scouting mojo carries over to his successor.

If that mojo could carry over to Luhnow it could carry over to anyone.

This will keep me warmer this winter than a Padres-A's-Dodgers blockbuster.

The '14 NLDS AB (2nd clip)... couple of things. I think Kershaw had thought about the 1st AB over the winter, and even though there were other battles in between (with much lower stakes), I think it spooked Clayton how many balls Marp fouled off. He threw a lot of fastballs which is weird, if the bases are loaded, and you have the secondary arsenal of Kershaw

I'm not gonna say it's tipping, it may be... I don't have anything concrete, but... they have something on him. Something in his sequencing, or his delivery...

Rob Kaminsky is coming. He's lefthanded, and throws at least 3 pitches very well.

Guys like Keyser know him already.

Reports surfacing of interest in trading for David Price. I have no idea what the Tiger would want for 1 year of Price's services, I'd think they would ask for Marco Gonzales or Piscotty and some lower level lottery tickets.

Lackey isn't threatening to retire, that I know of... but Waino and Wacha have some legitimate durability questions.

Just read where the Cardinals maybe in on Scherzer.

That does not seem like a Cardinal move at all.

If that happens they must be really worried about Waino

Max is from St. Louis, my guess is that they made an offer they feel comfortable with, just as due diligence and to explore the possibility of a hometown discount. I don't think their offer is anywhere near in dollars or years to Detroit's... I think the most likely scenario is him going back to Detroit.

The "minor" elbow procedure, given the problems experienced last year and total innings post TJS, has always made me question his health for 2015. There are Hamels rumors as well, but it seems clear to me Ruben Amaro Jr. is a crazy person. There were many reports that the Phillies wanted 2 of Baez, Russell, Bryant, and Soler for Hamels. That is insane.

I always liked Rick as a human being, even during that time it was thought he would never see a MLB diamond again, before slugging his way back in the minors. I can't think of too many players that overcame more mental obstacles... maybe Greinke or Hamilton.

I can't wait (and by "can't wait" I mean absolutely terrified) to see what Matheny ends up doing with all those outfielders.
