Id love Hunter but I think he'll probably go to an AL team so he can have the DH option

You're most likely right. The Twins and Royals are supposedly the two leaders in the clubhouse. The Royals need a DH now that Butler is gone.

I would die of happiness if the Cubs pulled this exact move off.

Hunter has gotten really bad at defense. My guess is he will DH. But the Cubs have been linked to him earlier this offseason.

Well, they have a new front office so who knows?

But they would actually save $18M over the next three seasons. That isn't dumb for a small market team.

Fair point. I kinda still think Montero can be really good again though. Id offer something else (gently used jock strap) for Jackson if Im trying to save money.

I love AJ but he is absolutely brutal in working with young guys.

He is great as a leader and teammate with established guys but you CANNOT put him around kids.

The Red Sox were a veteran team who hated him.

He's not good with young pitchers?

The Red Sox became a young team early in the season who hated him. He was brutal on Flowers and Beckham. I thought he had some problems in SF as well.

I don't remember him with young pitchers on the Sox but it's not like he could have dicked around with Sale and ever gotten away with it.

AJ wants to catch every inning of every game, which in a lot of ways is admirable. However he really takes it out on his backup when there is a hint of equal time. He hates to develop the guy who might take his job, as he showed with Flowers and the guy the Red Sox were highlighting last year.

I hate AJ. I do not want him near this team. He causes problems.

He's not a bad option off the bench as a LH contact hitter but if he is having that roll on a NL team, it requires them holding three catchers

Pass. If the Cubs are going to overpay an average veteran, let him at least be known as a good clubhouse presence.

I see Torii as sort of a consolation prize for whomever gets left at the altar courting Nelson Cruz.

Here is a young risky upside option.

@pgammo: Petriello: Grandal ready to break out http://t.co/8722kMOmQV via @bbtn My thoughts, precisely. Perfect for Cubs

@Buster_ESPN: You have to wonder if the hiring of Henry Blanco will create any traction for the Cubs' interest in Miguel Montero -- a Blanco pupil in '14

I thought Blanco was hired as 'quality assurance coach.' Is that Theo for 'catching coach?'

From Heyman

Sources suggest the Cubs have bid $138 million over six years for Lester, and the Red Sox suggested at least a willingness to go to $130 million for six years, while word is the Braves, Lester's current hometown team, bid somewhat lower than that. It's possible also that Chicago and Boston will go up from there, if they haven't already.

No thanks.

Long term contracts for 30 year old players... That never backfires.

Matt, Anibel was an overpay two years ago but then the consolation prize was Edwin. That was a double nut punch.

Get his Hancock dammit!

Sanchez would have been OK to overpay as he was still in his 20s. However, I think Lester is a far superior pitcher to Sanchez.

My thinking would be that if you have determined that 138 million is acceptable, you might as well be willing to go up should another 10-20 be demanded.

Given the current Cubs payroll, they should front load whatever the contract is so that it will be tradeable after 4 years.

Cubs could maybe say screw defense and pinch Wilin Rosario in a trade?
