SAN DIEGO -- There was a lot of speculation the Mets and Cubs would do a lot of talking about Chicago shortstop Starlin Castro at these Winter Meetings. But, it seems Starlin Castro is not available.

The Cubs informed the Mets, the Yankees (before they acquired Didi Gregorius) and other teams that Castro won't be going anywhere. So expect no Castro talk.

That actually makes sense as the Cubs are aiming to contend in 2014, and their top shortstop prospect Addison Russell is likely still a year away from the big leagues, making it necessary for the Cubs to keep Castro.

Castor, still only 24, stepped up to have a big 2014 season, making the All-Star team for a third time. Castro hit .292 with 14 home runs and 65 RBI in 2014.

I think when they say Castro is not available, that means he is available.

One doesn't trade Derek Jeter at 24 years old.

Sometimes, but they reportedly also told him he wouldn't be dealt. I doubt he is unless someone drastically overpays, which I don't think is likely.

you shouldn't have expectations that a place like CBS can afford to pay editors on the weekend. They also called Castro, Castor

Looks like Hamels is a done deal.

Getting his 1st half last year probably isn't realistic, but after his first 3-4 starts in Oakland, he was actually pretty solid for where you hope to slot him

If him and Hendricks slot 3/4..might have something

Lester-Arrieta-Hendricks-Hamels-then 1 of about 15 options

Like the Hammel signing for sure.

Solid 3/4 starter.

I'm still hoping somehow you get can Jordan Zimmermann from the Nationals, but I don't want to give up too much.

But if they sign Lester, for a reasonable amount, there would be no need.

Lester, Arrieta, Hammel, and Hendricks would be nice. And maybe CJ Edwards will find himself up before the end of the year.

Agreed they need to pony up now for a #1 starter be it Lester or via trade.

The time is now to win some damn ballgames.

Like it.

Is this a sign that maybe they think they are out on Lester and going to get some smaller deals done?

The extra $ saved on this certainly should be added to Lester pursuit.

yes, a below .500 season

Honestly, Cubbie Chubbies, I don't expect much from you but try to have SOME perspective.

You caught lightning in a bottle for half a season. Now you are projecting that to the middle of your rotation.

Hey Cubs fans, can we all agree to ignore the trolling in this thread for awhile?

It is a perfectly valid analysis. He was a scrap heap signing last year, produced for half a year and steak dinner, boom...he is a solid piece for the middle of a rotation.

Jason Hammel has struck a two-year, $20MM to return to the Cubs, according to reports. The deal includes a $10MM club option for a third season, with a $2MM buyout included as part of the aforementioned guarantee. Hammel will earn an even $9MM in each of the guaranteed years.

So Cubs essentially signed the Hammel to the same contract as Scott Feldman but with more flexibility. Nice.

Why? He has been good offensively in years and he's owed a lot of money.

They could easily move Castillo and sign Ross.
