Spending money is fine. Spending money to get to a certain ranking in payroll is not.

It seemed like that is what you were saying at first. I think we can move on now.

We can move on, but the thing that strikes me is that you said something like that being big spenders in free agency wasn't a good way to improve your team.

Both the Sox and Cubs will likely be significantly better next year. Is it a valid strategy?

Try and unload the last of Kenny's disasters.......Hawk's MONSTER......Tank Viciedo!!!

Tank at the plate is basically Gordon Beckham with 10 more homers. .230 hitter.

A strikeout machine who is a butcher in the field.

They say HE TRIES HARD BUT DOES NOT TAKE INSTRUCTION WELL.

Translation.......You can't fix stupid.

The White Sox signed one pitcher. The other was a trade. The Cubs added two guys.

That was always what I said. Make moves that make sense. To get to a high spot in the payroll rankings they would have had to spend stupidly.

In general, trying to buy a team in free agency is a bad way to go about it. (Every 20 years or so it might work out 97 Marlins, 09 Yankees in a way)

The Sox made more moves than that.

Also, trades that add payroll doesn't really change the topic of conversation.

But yes, I will acknowledge that making good moves is a good thing to do and making bad moves is a bad thing to do.

Worrying about your spot in the payroll rankings and spending for the sake of spending (find somewhere to spend the money) is always a bad idea.

You advocated both of those things at some point.

*sigh*

And we are back. Why is it so hard to admit I may have had a point? The Cubs and Sox both seemed to agree with me and both are poised to see improved teams next year. It certainly wouldn't be fair to call me ignorant and then have both teams do what they did unless of course you don't think both teams will be significantly improved.

You keep trying to separate yourself from the original two points you made that I detailed in my last post.

If you hadnt had those thoughts, we would have never argued.

You can stop with the ignorant thing. Im truly sorry that I pointed out that I follow one sport more than you and that my opinion might carry a little more weight (all the while acknowledging the opposite in other sports that you follow more)

I take it back. Officially. You know baseball just fine. You were wrong at first about payroll.

At the $$$ limit? Did they someone else?

Gonna have to open the wallet if you want a LF.

Interesting, but not surprising.

As much as the Sox seem to be "going for it", I'm not sure where they are headed with so many outs in that lineup (2B, LF, 3B and C). I'm sure they will add another bat in LF to replace Viceido, but really hope the offensive holes (and defense) don't minimize the top of that starting rotation. Every team is going to have issues and holes, but I'd be more comfortable if they were able to upgrade two of these positions

The Sox haven't reached any money limit. Their money limit is whatever Reinsdorf decides at a given moment. And no one has any clue what that might be. I can remember about ten years ago when it was reported over and over as if it were a fact that the Sox limit was $85 million in payroll. The next season they went to about $120 million. Nobody knows except Jerry.

I think he was quoting Kenny. Kenny sometimes talks to hear his head rattle. They're not even at $100 million. I really can't believe that there's some hard line at $95 million or whatever. If they need to go up they can and will.

I dont know who this Daryl guy is. I was kidding.

It has always been the White Sox/Kenny way to give the fans updates on the process and limitations. Way more than they need to

I think Kenny's real job title is Vice President in charge of Fan-Shaming.

You know I never think of season ticket holders when he would say stuff about fans coming out. Id think of the people who are "not coming out" and how they are probably like "fuck you kenny"

Its gotta be even more frustrating when you are coming out

3B is hardly an "out" or a "hole".

I've heard some outlandish opinions of Gillaspie over the last couple of days from people who are paid to know better.

Catcher is league average in production.

There are your two upgrades

They traded Rienzo for LHP Dan Jennings.

They needed to get another LOOGY because their Scott Snodgress end around didn't work. Rienzo won't be missed.

My mistake. You seem to like the reparte so it was a faulty assumption.

Your Frank comment was probably innocous, i was driving and in a bad mood earlier.

I WAS a lifelong RedSox fan.....31 years down the drain because of the current ownership group.

As the saying goes, all things come to an end.....and nothing lasts forever.

Theo Epstein and Jon Lester going to Chicago has unfortunately (for my family and friends) made me re-think about my allegiances.

I miss rooting for the things that make baseball great. Baseball Stadiums, Hot Dogs, Beer and the joy of rooting for your team to win. The Chicago Cubs are baseball at its roots.

In Chicago, baseball is still baseball. Up here in Boston, baseball is business, and business sucks when all they care about is tv ratings, revenue and raking every possible penny out of the fans.

I look forward to becoming a fan with all of you.

I have a couple questions...
1. How would you rate the fans in Chicago are in comparison to the Boston fans in terms of baseball IQ?
2. What do I need to know about this forum?
3. I've been doing my due dilligence, but what other resources are available to me to find out the "who's who" in the organization? I've been looking over baseball reference, but sometimes there are other resources available.

Thank you,
SCM33
