My kids wants a used PS3 for Christmas as it is cheaper and he can also get other stuff. I see a very wide range of prices, memory sizes and models. Anyone here have an idea on necessary requirements. He is like a GTA and shoot em up combat gamer.

i would buy a slim model if you are looking used. The original "fat" ps3's are more prone to either the blu ray drive failing (happened to me) or worse the yellow light of death. get one with at least 120 gb of storage too (i think the smallest drive for the slim models was 120)

Get him one of the Uncharted games (Uncharted 2 is the best) or I think they have the entire trilogy on one disc for like $20-40 at this point. They're fun 3rd person shooters.

You can also HDD swap any PS3 model pretty easily. My second generation PS3 came with a 40GB, I put a 250 GB HDD in it a few years back.

The system is still chugging, and I actually bought it used when I got it back in... 2008?

Thx. Do the games require a bunch of space? He is an Xbox 360 kid but apparently he has some buds on this and some games he can't play on Xbox.

They vary widely. Older games will generally take up less space. Newer games will take up a lot more. And then the type of game makes a large difference...from one genre to another.

Any of the PS3 Slim models should have large enough HDD no matter what kind you get. The smallest slim was 120GB I think.

I have a 320 GB and I have about 25 downloaded games and a shit ton of music on it and I still have about 40 GB left. The music takes up a ton of space.
