From Haughs article today. Wow.

The lackluster effort by the 53 Bears in uniform struck a stark contrast to the love for the game expressed by one who wasn't — injured safety Chris Conte. Conte, who sat out with an injured back, raised eyebrows with pregame comments to WBBM-AM's Zach Zaidman that weighed his desire to play with the risk his concussion history presents.

"I'd rather have the experience of playing in the NFL and die 10 to 15 years earlier than not play in the NFL and have a long life,'' said Conte, who has left seven games early due to injuries. "I don't really look toward my life after football.''

I saw this from Haugh yesterday, and commented about it on FB.

Absolutely love the honesty and passion from Conte, and I wish more guys in the NFL had it. I hope he brains his damage in somebody else's secondary next year.

I guess you can admire the honesty but sounds pretty sad to me. We'll see if he still feels that way at 50 when he can't remember his grandkids names but hey I spent a couple of years being a shitty safety for a shitty team. His choice I guess.

B & B were talking about this with Zaidman last night before the game. I have no doubt that is how he currently
feels about it. He is a single guy with no kids. He could easily change his tune 5 years from now.

Conte and Derrick Rose are clearly at each end of the spectrum.

What else is he going to do?

He has no other set of skills other than playing football (and even those skills are bad). He'll probably be out of the league within a year anyway, so he better cash those checks as long as he can.

It's a Simpsons reference. Homer said "I think I brained my damage."

People should just keep quiet on these type of issues.

D Rose says he is thinking about his life after basketball and gets criticized.

Conte says he is not thinking about his life after football and gets criticized.

It is a no win situation.

He can always have a career at ESPN. There's a neverending flow of overconcussed "analysts" that can make enough physical gestures to be considered alive enough to be on the air.

Until roughly 8:15 this morning I had no idea that Haugh was All-Conference safety (and Academic All-American, apparently for real) at Ball State, and has a Master's in journalism from Medill. No wonder Bernstein hates him so much.
