2337 S Michigan, complimented by the new Rahmarena. Its an example of Government REALLY developing an area.

This is how areas develop in a city, woth government cooperation, not by them doing everything, but making it easier and cheaper for others to open projects in areas that woudl otherwise never be considered.

I don't like that they are trying to make Euro style beers. Let them have those malty beers. American craft beer is so much better.

Developing around the convention center otherwise never would have been considered? I mean, maybe not, inasmuch as one bothered to do it before, but it's surprising to think that it took this long. I'm glad the neighborhood is getting better, I just don't think the city needs to finance a Marriott and a basketball arena.

I agree that government should facilitate development as a general concept, but I have my reservations about the means of doing so, namely TIF districts.

The TIF is what is going to make that entire area.

Redevelopments of recent failures with TIFs are a problem. Lawrence Ave got a TIF funding to redo it. Is that going to do anything to change its current status? probably not, except the MArianos that went in at Ravenswood.

TIFs hurt schools so much, though, and Chicago Public Schools don't need more pain than they already have.

The problem with TIFs is that they are a noble idea gone wrong. Conceived as an engine to spur development and investment in blighted areas, they have instead become tools to reward the friends of the political class. It's crony capitalism at its most vile.

You can say the same thing about the riverboats. Originally the gambling bill was passed to help poor river communities, places like Metropolis and Belleville. Instead, it's become more welfare for the wealthy and there are countless boats competing to take the poor man's cash in the decidedly non-blighted Chicago suburbs.

you know what the worst part about welfare for the wealthy is? no old wealthy guy is gonna go crank out a definitive welfare anthem like first of the month. it's a shame.

Who is the idiot who decided to name a brewery in Chicago something that sounds like it comes from Detroit?

You like what you like, I guess, but the fact is that just about every craft brewer in the Chicago area of any note got his start at Goose.

Goose Island are innovators. They produce several highly rated, sought after beers. They are the top dogs in town.

Here is a list of their beers, and their impressive scores.

My guy who started Goose Island could not be more of an expert of beer. The man has sampled more beer possibly than any human on this earth.
