I think firing Lovie had more to do with contract status. I'm guessing he had 1 year remaining, which is naturally the time you would talk extension. Emery probably wanted his own coach and Lovie I would guess new there was a brighter future elsewhere.
As has been said already, Trestman is making Lovie look really good. team wouldn't be much better in the standings, but they certainly wouldn't have quit.
Lovie doesn't need Trestman to look good. Competitive defenses for the majority of his tenure here. Offense sucked and that's on him too. But his accomplishments on defense are strong enough to stand alone. Lastly, guys played hard for him.
