His "tremendous success" was a couple of 9-4 and 8-5 at Rutgers. In the Big East.

You have spent many a thread on this site telling me how inferior the Big East was to the Big Ten. The Big East was the league that was gonna fold, because it deserved to fold...blah, blah, blah. And that MF'er wore out his welcome there!

Schiano is the poor man's Harbuagh. Red-ass, gritty. But less success at the college level, and the pro level. And what was Schiano's nickname as a longtime NFL QB??

I've read it.

That's what convinced a couple weeks ago.

There aren't a ton of great options out there and I want someone who has sat in the chair before.

Think about the chair he's sat in.

Is that better than Holmgren's chair?

The NFL has passed Holmgren by.

I don't think we'll agree, spanky.

i think he could potentially be an excellent NFL coach.

I don't want some retread like Shanahan.

Schiano tried to jump on the NFL train but missed the last car and fell broke an ankle.

 You......

Schiano will not be a head coach anywhere in the NFL next year. Maybe ever.

Just because I'm in favor of it doesn't mean it will happen.

I know it's a long shot.

I think he will probably get another shot someday, though.

Ehh...

He's gotta get a shot at mid-level college program first, IMO. And then succeed there.

And even if he succeeds at a place like...West Virginia.....he's got to step up and succeed at a big time program before he gets another shot at the NFL. He was way out over is skis in the NFL. I do not want him near the Bears.

There was clearly a problem between Mike Tomlin and the Bengals DB Nelson after the game.
Marv Lewis handled that situation GREAT!

How does Trestman handle that?

I vote Bo Pelini for a two year interim contract during which we have an agreement to negotiate with other head coaches.

Everyone I heard on the Score this weekend was high on Shanahan, which was baffling enough, but this was compounded by the fact that all cited "being able to work with Cutler" as one of the main reasons for their support. The Bears may be unable to unload Cutler on another team, but hamstringing another coaching with this kind of thinking seems like a good way to guarantee disappointing results into the foreseeable future.

Can I vote for anyone but Shannahan?

Shannahan would be a hire only slightly better than Trestman.

The only chance this team has is a coach that has no ties or loyalty to Jay Cutler who can make the best football decisions and not feel like he is working for Jay Cutler. This coach may choose to work with Jay Cutler but Cutler has to prove to him he is worth standing behind and not the other way around.

Couldn't get him 11 years ago and all he has done since is build a dynasty. What makes you think they could get him now.?

Biography
Teryl Austin enters his first season with the Detroit Lions as the team’s defensive coordinator after spending the previous three seasons as the Baltimore Ravens defensive backs coach. A former safety at the University of Pittsburgh, Austin brings 23 years of defensive coaching experience to the Lions’ staff, specifically with a special talent for developing and teaching defensive backs. He has spent 10 of the last 11 seasons as a defensive backs coach in the NFL, including stints with the Seattle Seahawks (2003-06), Arizona Cardinals (2007-09) and most recently with the Ravens (2011-13). With each of his NFL stops, he has helped his teams pave the way to Super Bowl appearances (Seattle in 2005, Arizona in 2008 and Baltimore in 2012). In 2012, he helped guide the Ravens to a win in Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans.

Liked Darrell Bevell two years ago and still like him but he is certainly not my only candidate.

Get me a young offensive minded guy. I'd even take a college guy. Then get me a strong defensive coordinator AND an older offensive coordinator, maybe one with HC experience (but no HC aspirations) to act as a mentor/strawboss on some of the personell issues.

I don't care about an ass kicking head coach but someone has to be an ass kicker in the locker room

I like the way you think about this. Here's a combo I was thinking of along the same lines: Steve Sarkissian at HC with Lovie and Jim Fassel at DC and OC respectively.

I don't hate the Rex Ryan or Mike Shanahan ideas.

Todd Bowles is interesting.

Niners have already requested permission to speak to Bowles.

Bears had better get moving on this shit.

Schiano would be a horrible hire. Dave Toub? No thanks.
I would hire Saban in a heartbeat.

I wouldnt mind one of the hot rising NCAA coaching stars.
