It's serious.
Our bodies digest carbs easier and first (before) fats and proteins and other additives. That's what our bodies want to use as energy.

Want to make your body truly healthier? Cut the other stuff out. Not just carbs.

Want to lose weight and still lead whatever (eating) lifestyle you want? Cut out the carbs!

Ok, so you're saying that the lo carb thing is good for losing weight but its not actually that healthy?

It's good for losing weight pretty much no matter how you do it but it's only healthy if you do it in a logical way. That is true for most fad diets though. If you have steak and bacon dinner every day you are just trading some health problems for others.

Honestly though it's just a way to kickstart a different diet. If you eat less calories than you use in a day you will lose weight assuming you hit your minimum required calories for the day. This has always been true.

The problem is that for most people what they eat isn't the problem. It is they aren't getting enough physical activity. Limiting calories + eating more fruits and vegetables + getting more physical activity is better than anything else. However, "EAT ALL THE STEAK YOU WANT AND BE THIN AND HEALTHY!" sounds more appealing.

Luckily, I never get tired of chicken. Salad with Chicken for 50% of my meals. The other 50 divided between Steak, Pork, and Turkey.

Im not going crazy with red meats or anything.

I think with me its more about sugar. I was a sugar junkie.

Try getting a medium coffee once in a while.

This seems to be where a lot of the new thinking is going.

Sugar, even at low levels, is really bad for you. Unfortunately, it's really hard to avoid.

He doesn't know what the fuck he is talking about. He has said so many things that are patently false, it would be a waste of time to address them.

If you have any questions, speak to a dietician.

Update on my diet: On a dietician's recommendation, I have begun eating 1/2 of an avocado for breakfast. This superfood is perfect for a lo-carb diet, and the weird thing about it is, even if that were all you consumed for breakfast, you won't feel hungry until lunch. No garnishments needed - just plain avocado. Dietician says that after a month the first change you will notice is how healthy your skin looks and feels.

I may have to give the avocado thing a try. Thanks for the tip, Q.

Been on it for two weeks now. Lost about 11 pounds, mostly water and glycogen storage weight, but I feel pretty damn good at almost all hours of the day.

It is really amazing how you feel when you dump almost all sugar from your diet.

I am now in ketosis mode, where my body is actively using fat as fuel, whereas before it preferred starches and sugars.

It is unbelievable how quickly the weight comes off with a low carb diet. If you haven't done it before, expect periodic plateaus where the weightloss seemingly stops. At that point have some pizza or other carb laden meal and then start up again.

Also, once you move to phase 2 I highly recommend Dreamfields low carb pasta. Tastes just like regular, unlike whole wheat and others marketed as low carb. Also Healthy Life bread for sandwiches @ 3 carbs per slice. Both take some of the depravation out of the diet.

Tough time to start a diet though.

There are doubters about the pasta. The bread sounds good though.

Yeah, I'm a sugar monster and desperately need to cut my consumption back. It's a struggle, though, given the number of late nights I'm either working or staying up with one of the kids.

Agreed, especially the way its advertised (EAT ALL THE BACON IN THE CITY)

If you just try to cut carbs and eat healthy in general, that's good.

I think most of the low-carb dieters look at that as a free pass to eat all of the meat they can find.
Known around here as the "Arkansas/Milwaukee" diet.

Its nice and all I'm just not sure I can find a permanent way to eat like this. I like pasta and bread. Well see. Its good for now
But yeah cutting sugar out is awesome. Never realized how many sugar peaks and valleys were present in my day

Your cholesteral should actually go down on a low carb diet.

Huh?
Load up on steak/chops/seafood, cut down on potatoes and bread and you think the cholesterol levels go down??

Yup. Look it up.

I have talked with my Doctor numerous times about the Paleo diet and low carb diets and he recommends the paleo diet to his patients. I gave up soda, sugar, bread, dairy and all processed foods 16 months ago and my blood test results were the best they have been in 10 years.
White foods are all bad for you. I make an exception for rice with sushi and eggs.

the processed food part is why youre seeing results.

i have found (with chrons for a decade) that i can eat pretty much whatever i want as long as i stay away from processed foods. its weird how much of a difference it makes.

red baron pizza vs papa murphys for example- red baron (or any frozen pizza) tastes amazing but it makes me bloated and farty and overall lethargic for two days. papa murphys just digests easy and i feel great.

or if i eat a burger from a fast food joint... usually takes days to get over that too... but if i cook cow meat at home and make a burger it digests wonderfully.

i really think the preservatives they put in processed foods are whats causing the problems. that, and/or, the foods are broken down so much that they dont provide the right complex of nutrients your gut needs to properly digest stuff.

I dont like milk and that spread to a lot of dairy and white food. Alfredo sauce and Ranch are both gross to me.
