I have no issue with this. Any coach interested in the Bears have already had their agent call them or their consultant.

You mean any coach not currently on a playoff team or who is unemployed?

Even the playoff teams. This isn't really a surprise like the firing of Lovie. Everyone that wanted to be an NFL coach was aware this was likely to happen. They pay their agents for things like this.

wasnt the entire reason we went through the mike martz year long offensive vomit plan was because we waited too long to hire someone better?

What does it matter? They will end up with a second-rate GM and another craptastically bad coach.

No. It's because no one wanted to be on the Lovie Smith Imminently Fired Plan.

You should, because you have this backwards. Potential GMs and coaches don't submit their resumes and sit around clicking refresh on their email; the Bears have to request permission to interview anyone employed by another team. In the case of coaches working for playoff teams, you either do it this week or you wait until they're eliminated. I know we're barely twelve hours into this process, but it's not exactly a good sign that the Jets appear to have their shit significantly more together than the Bears do.

They have agents for that. Any good agent would be aware of potential job openings well in advance. The Bears are not at a disadvantage.

Exactly. The Bears & Ernie should have been working this back-channel weeks ago. Don't tell me about tampering. It happens all the time and is nearly impossible to prove.
How many GM's and coaches does Teddy get to hire?

You would think Accorsi would already have a short list for the Bears to pick from.

Coaches and potential GM's have agents. Therefore there is no need for the potential coaches and GM's to check their emails every second of the day or reach out to teams. A good agent knew about every potential opening in advance and informed their clients. Their clients let them know if they had interest. You hire an agent so you don't have to search for jobs and so you can focus on preparing a team for the playoffs. This is why I say the Bears aren't at a disadvantage. If they were talking to people before firing Angelo why wouldn't they be doing the same thing now?

I honestly have no idea what you're on about here. The Bears can't talk to anyone without formally requesting permission from their respective employers. Vis-a-vis coaching candidates, this week only, teams can interview guys currently working for the Seahawks, Packers, Pats, and Broncos. If you miss that window, you can't interview anyone who's currently employed by a playoff team until said team is eliminated. This presents a problem because the coaching search is a zero-sum game; if another team hires a coach, that's one less candidate available to the Bears. The Falcons are likely to move quickly on a coach because they already have a GM in place, and the Jets are taking advantage of this week to put together a book on Quinn, presumably so that they can move quickly once they have a GM in place. That being the case, I think it's a really bad idea for the Bears to be sitting on their hands this week when they could be knocking out preliminary interviews with guys like Quinn or Bevell or Clements or McDaniels or Gase, and I seriously cannot fathom why you would disagree, or what agents have to do with any of this.

You really think there is no back channel talk going on with agents before a team requests permission to with a coach or potential GM? You really think Quinn is a special candidate? He inherited a great defense. Pretty sure the Bears talked to Bevell a few years ago and McDaniels isn't an option. Clements sucked without Rodgers and there is zero chance they give him permission to speak to the Bears. That leaves Gase. He isn't really the offensive coordinator. Peyton Manning runs that offense. The Bears are fine. There is no hot job that anyone is going to jump on.

Getting permission to talk to a guy is an easy rule to get around. There are back channel discussions going on all the time. Guys who aren't "affiliated with the team" are reaching out to guys frequently to gauge their level of interest. The Bears definitely seem to be behind when it comes to having guys lined up who they have already talked with. I think the Bears tactic is to just wait for guys to contact them, which is a bad strategy.
Teddy has been with the Bears for 30 years...you would think that in those 30 years he would have built a network of contacts & guys in the league that he could draw from.

I'd agree with you with if Emery was still in place. Appears like the Bears are looking to overhaul football operations so I'd make sure I hire the right GM 1st. Whichever coach gets hired he's going to get screwed the next two years anyways with the GM having to clean up the Emery mess.

I don't know and I don't care. We're talking about hiring a head coach, not buying a used mattress on Craigslist. Back-channel discussions are irrelevant. What is relevant is the interview, which the Bears need permission to do, which they haven't requested yet, which puts them behind teams they're competing agains, which is bad.

Scorehead's similarly insipid post clarified one thing: with all this shit about agents, do you mean to say that potential candidates are gauging their interest in the Bears? Because that is precisely backwards. Teams with vacancies generate a list of people they like, and then request interviews with them, not the other way around. It's an NFL head-coaching job. Anyone who doesn't currently have one is interested.

I don't really follow the careers of NFL coordinators, so I have no idea if any of them are any good, but it doesn't really matter, because they're the guys available. My point is simply that it makes sense to more weed out the non-hackers as early as possible. Talking yourself out of taking advantage of this week is how you end up with soneone like Jack Del Rio as your head coach.
