Can't remember once hearing anything about drafting or scouting from George or Ted. Did I miss something?

When they hired Emery, remember how much Bernstein fawned about his ability to incorporate stats in his decision making? Emery was supposed to be very good at scouting, flying around to watch guys. If I'm Ted Phillips, I address it in the conference, because I think that's the biggest failure in all of this. A guy was selected to improve the roster with more solid drafting than the previous regime. Instead, he gave Cutler a shitload of money and made the team one of the oldest in the leagues.

Remember when Bill Barnwell called Emery "GM of the Future" because he gave really long pressers (or something?). Those were the days.

If I'm Ted Phillips, I address the tax ramifications of MACRS-7 depreciation in all of this.

Thats so far down the line at this point. Might take a year or 2 to get to that level.

You guys can call me then

Didn't Emery keep the scouts that where in place from Angelo when he was hired?

The Bears do need some new blood in the scouting department. I cringe at some of the thoughts spewed by Gabriel and I imagine some of the same minds are in the room when he was. Same thought process. A little unsettling.

This team has two legitimate, pro-bowl quality players on offense and two on defense. You can't win super bowls with re-treads from other teams and poorly drafted players that come through your system. This thing needs to be gutted and re-built. I think that its a three to five year timeline. George and Ted are fucking lunatics if they think this team can be turned around by next season for the season after.

Jeffrey, Forte, Long, Marshall and Bennett would start and be difference makers for almost any team in the league. Cutler and Bushrod both have Pro Bowls in their not too distant past. Slausen was their best lineman two years ago.

The Bears have enough on offense to compete at high levels tomorrow given proper discipline, coaching and planning.

the offense could be "ok" but the defense is horrendous, so who cares? 9-7 doesn't excite me.

The last year of Lovie, you could see the whole thing was falling apart with no talent on the horizon. Instead of entering "re-build" mode, the doubled down on old guys and it failed miserably. I assume McCaskey was part of that thinking process.

Forte, Bushrod and Marshall seemed to have regressed; though, Marshall may have been due to injury. Jeffrey... I'll chalk this year up to injury. Cutler is Cutler.

2. A hyper-focus on process.
If you listen to Emery in press conferences or talk to him, you’ll hear the word “process” come up so many times that you’ll lose count. That’s a good thing. You can phrase it however you want — “process” often means the same thing as “the plan” in this context — but it’s essential for an NFL general manager to have a clear idea of his long-term process and stick with it regardless of short-term outcomes. That thought came up again and again when I looked at Ted Thompson’s history earlier this week.

To Emery, focusing on the process not only provides a better chance of building a winner, it performs the perhaps more-meaningful role of preventing you from overreacting to fleeting streaks of success or failure. “Some of those bumps along the way are like hitting a tree; losses are very tough, particularly ones that have more impact than others [at the end of the season]. They’re tough to work through, but you have to believe in the process and the talents of the people you work with. If you let outcome drive you, you’ll be all over the place and never develop the process to get to the final goal.” And to Emery, the final goal isn’t simply winning a Super Bowl, which itself usually requires some incredible luck along the way. It’s “to be a consistent winner, to consistently be in the championship mix, and win championships.”

In terms of these Bears, it’s pretty clear that process involves focusing on drafting and developing young talent. Emery’s NFL background is as a scout with the Bears and as the director of college scouting for the Falcons and, more recently, the Chiefs, so it seems natural that he would have a passion for identifying emerging college talent and using that to build the organization. The changes to rookie contracts in the new CBA and the stagnant post-CBA growth of the salary cap make building through the draft more essential than ever before. Emery hasn’t put a Thompson-esque focus on stockpiling draft picks, having made minor moves to trade up in each of his first two drafts, but his one notable draft pick trade appears to be a huge success: The Bears would happily trade two third-round picks for Brandon Marshall again.

They need to fire the entire scouting department. They're mostly Angelo guys.

Forte just broke the record for receptions by a running back and rushed for 1,000 yards behind a line where no starter started 16 games.

I chalk up a lot of the offensive problems this year to injuries along the OL.

if i were the bears i'd happily trade two 3rd round picks for marshall again. the guy had 1500+ yds and 11TD in year one (10-6) and 1200+ yds and 12TD in year 2 (8-8 and with a week 17 matchup to win and get in that they lost)

even before this year goes into consideration i'd say that's a great move for two 3rd round picks because when you have a quarterback who south park totally nailed years ago "you kinda suck but my dad says you might be good some day" --- well he needs all the help he can get. and you just can't look back at 2012 now with the gift of hindsight and say that was the wrong move to make.

it was a brilliant move, and whatever this team has going forward b4 the inevitable rebuild/new-QB is going to depend on those two 3rd round picks you gave up.

and if emery drafted two more guys in the 3rd round what the hell are they doing for the bears right now?

Why trade picks when you coukd get him for free? The Bears could have gotten him for free and for less than the contract they inherited.

The Bears got him for a good contract. I remember during that off season comparing what Vincent Jackson got in free agency in terms of dollars and years as an older player and being very pleased.

That was a market to slightly below market contract. Nothing wrong with inheriting that paper.

The best part is Barnwell defining "a hyper-focus on process" as, essentially, saying the word "process" a lot.

Emery's douchebag speak wasn't complete without "low hanging fruit" and "quick wins"

Yes he did. Emery was a former Angelo scout.

The entire place needs to be blown out.

Meh, all they talked about when Phil was hired was scouting and drafting, and talking about it didn't make it any better.

I think it goes without saying that this area is one of many that needs massive improvement, wether or not they spend time talking about it during this process doesn't mean anything imo.

I agree with this, as well as your further point that Emery doesn't get shit out of any of those 3rd round picks anyways. The initial move for Marshall was the right move, even in hindsite.

What I don't care for was the longer term contract they decided to hand Marshall, he is getting older and has a history of problems -while you also have a potential younger #1 WR on your team in Jeffery. Alshon put up decent numbers this year but also played bad at times (as did the entire team outside of Forte) but I think with a good coach and staff he still has the ability to be a #1.

the problem was not blowing up the roster when Emery came in. it was obvious this thing was about to sail off the cliff.

The Bears are like a cement block foundation brick and plaster wall home in one of the neighborhoods with older housing. Great neighborhood appeal, but riddled with foundation, water, mold, electrical, and plumbing issues.

They're Virginia McCaskey's house in Des Plaines?

Emery's drafts have been the biggest issue after you put aside his general lack of leadership ability.

i think his veteran signings have been worst than his drafting.
