why is this not one of the headlines coming out of yesterday?

Your family has owned the team since the beginning of the league. You have worked in the organization for 40 years. Shouldn't YOU have the industry knowledge to hire an executive?

Now we know that the answer to this is no. We know that hiring a guy like Accorsi is the correct move (although a consultancy is incredibly troubling to me). However, the need to hire him is a pretty strong statement that he doesn't know how to do his job.

The proper move at this time is for the Mc Caskeys to hire an Accorsi type to be a full time president, with full control of the organization. Mc Caskeys can step aside, collect their money and be the team mascot. If they have this absolute need to be involved in the day to day, take Sweaty Teddy's job, have him work under you and separate administration from football operations.

You do bring in a valid point but I just respect George for seeing the mistakes and bailing early. I was so happy to see Vanisi gone,it didn't matter that the guy they brought in seemed kind of "odd". As a fan you just go with the decision. Hopefully they get it right this time.

But the way they worded it, its not. The media is just spinning it that way. He's a consultant. He is just there to help in "the search" because "the search" was the problem last time. Not George or Ted. They are doing this because it took too much time and effort for "the search" last time.

It's so stupid I can hardly even talk about it. How could they hire Accorsi? Shouldn't they have hired someone else to consult on hiring Accorsi? Where does it end? Aren't you already paying people to make these decisions? Besides, ultimately it's going to be Ted Phillips making the call once again and double-talking about the process. Fucking ridiculous.

It sounded like they hired a consultant to provide cover for a pick they will make. Both seemed to ne too concerned about the way the public views them. IMO they were too sensitive about it.

so now hiring a consultant is an indictment... if george had said he would make the decision himself without a consultant he would have been blasted by all bears fans for not using a consultant/expert.... apparently he cant win at anything

if you believe accorsi is a good consultant.. you should believe the list of candidates he offers are all good options... so by that logic the bears shouldnt be able to fail like they did last time with the non-football affliated executive search firm they used.

You have completely missed the point.

The implication of hiring a consultant is that you don't have the capacity in house. That is inexcusable for a family that created the NFL and is four generations into management of a $2 billion NFL enterprise.

He is flat out saying he doesn't know how to do his job. The word indictment is justified.

This is different discussion than whether it is wise to hire an Accorsi type. Of course that move is wise when you recognize you cannot perform the essential tasks of management.

Is it really Phillips making decisions? It always goes back to mom or one of her sons making the call.

Is it suprising? It's like the rested on their laurels for so long the way to do things completely passed them by. This is what they have, no other business sense there or available to them. They don't know because they have never had to.

I get the feeling that Phillips is almost like one of the sons at this point. He's gotten a lot of mileage out of that stadium deal. He's the Tom Hagen of the McCaskey family.

Agreed.

I don't have a problem with Accorsi...the problem is that he (or someone similar) should have been hired full-time, not just as a temp.

The problem with hiring Accorsi as a consultant is that he has no skin in the game. Unless he has some incentive clause, such as a $1m bonus if the Bears make the playoffs next year or SB within 3, then he has no real pressure to give them the best advice. I'm sure he'll give them some good opinions, but it's different when it's your ass on the line.

It would be funny if Accorsi went to George and said, "You really want my advice? Fire Ted."

I thought the flip side to this is that Accorsi as an employee rather than a consultant gives GM candidates with options a feeling that the organization finally has some legitimacy to it.

This is so stupid. They don't need Accorsi to give them candidates. The media knows who they are. You just look at the good teams and talk to the lieutenants that are directly below the GM. That's all Accorsi is gonna give George and Ted. Except he'll just give you his friends or his friends friends. So it won't be a thorough search.

Out of the 4 you posted here, Newsome seems like the only competent one, and he comes from a strong organization too.

Overall I haven't liked many of the names out there that I've read about tho.

Totally agree with this. And if I'm an Accorsi guy, isn't that the first thing I'm going to tell Accorsi when he calls me? This is actually very typical of business. When there is a major issue going on, you throw a consultant at it to fix it, but you don't fix the people and process that caused the problem in the first place.

I think the essential tasks of management is finding the right people to make a hire. And the Bears are using the same approach that Atlanta and the Jets are using to find new talent.

If you want to bring a new lawyer to your firm, do you seek out the advice and counsel of others?
