He's my hope for the new VP of Football Operations. Ozzie is only 58, is he going to wait another 5-10 years to get promoted? Raise, Title and job with the charter franchise would be enough to get him.

Plus Baltimore, outside of a small area by the harbor, is just a vapid shithole

Do it.

agreed. I can cite examples a mile long of older guys who are "a year or two from retirement" who stay on forever.

but the bears aren't getting him

From what I've read DeCosta isn't interested as long as Ted Phillips is there.

I've heard the same.

You retitle Phillips VP of Business Ops and DeCosta as VP of Football Ops. Same level.

I do like the idea of the other Baltimore candidate tho, Vince Newsome - but something tells me he won't come here for similar reasons. I believe he is one of the GM candidates anyways.

The longer this drags on, the dumber it looks imo as the Bears should have already had a guy in mind and ready to go unless they are pulling from one of the playoff teams and simply don't have access just yet to who they want. Not sure how it works when it comes down to what is allowed and what isn't.

I'd be cool with that, or telling Ted to pack his shit and go fuck himself.

Either way..

He probably feels he'll be the next one to be brutally murdered and then buried in a location that only he knows.

I don't think it's that Hatchet.

From what I've heard, he has been promised the Ravens job and is being paid really well to stick around. It's been said it would have to be a perfect situation for him to leave.

Which leaves out the Bears.

Yes, it does.

DeCosta is my guy. I mentioned it in one of the other threads. I don't know anything about Vince Newsome but why are you settling for the minimum 3rd guy in an organization?

DeCosta would move to the Bears if you tell him "it's all yours, we're out of this" and throw a bunch of money at him. But, they can't take their damn hands completely off the football wheel.

Big no on Newsome. Not sure if I posted it here but he was described as a "nice guy......good family man". Fuck the Boy Scout who will go to Church with Virginia bullshit.

I agree. I think if it has to be done George will shift Ted sideways and let DeCosta, or whoever is a good football mind that has a problem with Ted, turn this proud but ailing franchise around.

A fair point..

..but lets keep in mind that Baltimore is a team that is run pretty efficiently from top to bottom. While DeCosta may be what we all prefer, Newsome has been kept around for years and even promoted to a pretty high position in that well run organization that doesn't seem to make too many bad decisions. Thats worth more than I think some people are giving it credit for. What he is described as 'being a nice guy, good family man..' shouldn't default to him being shit as a potential smart football guy. I know we are used to reading/hearing stuff like that right before the Bears make a hire that sucks, but I think this one might be different.

He is the teams director of pro personell currently, routinely works (and learns from) Ozzie Newsome going over roster decisions and so forth on the daily and has been doing that for at least the last 5 seasons. He also served on the pannel that interviewed and ultimatley hired John Harbaugh as well.

I like DeCosta myself, but maybe no matter what the Bears give him he still won't come, even removing Ted and giving him ultimate power. And maybe given the chance, Vince Newsome turns out to be better at this than DeCosta. Of course, its all speculation and only time will tell.

In short, I like Newsome because he comes from a competent team and has been with them for a while working for their decision makers directly and hopefully, learning from them -more than i can say for some of the other candidates I've been reading about.

Its possible but its odd that Ted was front and center at the press conference if this is an option.

He holds a high up position inside a very successful NFL front office, is young (in his early 40's maybe?), has worked his way up the Ravens front office latter overseeing scouting, drafting, and player personell decisions over the years and is the current hand picked successor to Ozzie Newsome as Baltimores current asst. GM. He was also in on the hiring of John Harbaugh (as was Vince Newsome the other Baltimore candidate).

I've also heard he kills men by the hundreds. And if HE were here as our GM, he'd consume the Packers with fireballs from his eyes, and bolts of lightning from his arse.

Just heard Randazzo report that the Bears have asked to interview him. The first I've heard of it.

Thank God Accorsi reads the board.

Quote:
(CBS) The Bears have requested permission to interview five individuals for their vacant general manager job, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The candidates are Chiefs director of player personnel Chris Ballard, Titans vice president of player personnel Lake Dawson, Ravens assistant general manager Eric DeCosta, Texans director of pro personnel Brian Gaine and Saints director of player personnel Ryan Pace, Schefter reported.
Ballard is a familiar name around these parts, as he spent 11 seasons with the Bears previously — as an area scout from 2001-’11 and as the director of pro scouting in 2012 before moving on to Kansas City. He had a hand in the Bears drafting Pro Bowlers Matt Forte, Johnny Knox, Charles Tillman, Tommie Harris and Nathan Vasher.
Dawson, 42, has worked for eight seasons in Tennessee, “managing day-to-day football operations and overseeing the pro personnel and college scouting departments,” according to the Tennessean. Dawson interviewed for GM jobs with the Dolphins and Buccaneers last offseason.
DeCosta is one of the hottest names around, as he’s worked under the respected Ozzie Newsome and helped the Ravens win the Super Bowl title after the 2012 season. The Jets also have asked permission to interview DeCosta, who is viewed by many as the GM-in-waiting when Newsome decides to retire someday.
Gaine is a Bill Parcells protege, having worked under Pacells with the Jets, Cowboys and Dolphins. He’s been in Houston for one season after previously working for six years in Miami.
Pace was the Saints’ director of pro scouting for six years before becoming director of player personnel in 2013. He attended Eastern Illinois University, where he played from 1995-’99.
It’s not yet known if the Bears’ requests to interview each candidate have been granted. Bears chairman George McCaskey said that ideally, the team would hire a GM before a coach, but management won’t stall on a preferred coaching candidate just because a GM isn’t in place.
In the coaching search, the Bears have requested permission to interview Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase and Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, per reports. Chicago has also expressed interest in Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak.

Why the fuck are the Bears, or anyone for that matter, interviewing people from unsuccessful programs like the Titans and Chiefs?

What has happened at these programs that demonstrates these idiots are worth consideration?

By this logic no would have interviewed or hired Belicheck or Carroll

How so? Billy B was a Parcells coaching tree guy from the Giants and Carroll was a big shot successful college coach.

Belicheck had a bad run at Cleveland. Carroll had a couple bad runs in the NFL.

I just do not think you can eliminate someone from consideration because they were a part of an unsuccessful program.

The body of work that you're involved with should be a big part of the evaluation and some of the names listed like Ballard for example, don't have much history with anything all that successful. On the other hand Billy B and Petey still had large amounts of success at points prior to being hired to look at.

I understand your point, but to some extent respectfully disagree with you. If you want to build a good program, you should be looking at people that have been part of successful programs rather than people who never really have.

DeCosta not leaving Ravens
Posted by Mike Florio

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before. Ravens assistant G.M. Eric DeCosta won’t be leaving Baltimore.

According to Albert Breer of NFL Media, DeCosta has informed interested teams that he’s not interested in any G.M. vacancies. DeCosta, who is widely believed to be the in-house choice to succeed Ozzie Newsome when Newsome retires, has never given any indication that he wants to leave the franchise.

But his name continues to emerge in pretty much every hiring cycle, which isn’t a bad things for DeCosta. Especially if his annual renewal of vows with the Ravens results in a sweetening of his package from owner Steve Bisciotti.
