Joe Torre has turned down a one-year, $5 million offer to return as the manager of the New York Yankees.

It sounds like they offered him a paycut to stay with the team and Torre told them to pound sand. Good for him.

They offered him a pay cut, but he was already the highest paid manager in the game. The $7M he maid last year was the most by double. They offered him $5M with incentives (if the Yankees made the world series, that amount would reach $8M). So, something tells me he was just fed up with all of the bullshit.

I think he was looking for an out without giving the appearance that he quit, and the "insulting" offfer of only $5 mil gave him that.

He'll probably take less to manage somewhere else and be happier doing it. If he wants to stick it to Goerge, he'd take the Mets job, but loyalty to Randolph won't allow that to take place.

He hadn't won with team (and it's payroll) over the past several seasons, and was constantly being threatened by the Boss. If he would have accepted a 1 year deal, it would been the same story again, plus this was for less money. I think it was an easy decision for him - now, we'll see if some other team is willing to give him some ridiculous contract. All it takes is one team, and it will be interesting to see if he has success elsewhere without an unlimited payroll.

In 12 seasons he led the Yanks to the playoffs. 4 World titles in that time period. 4 titles for the Yanks in 12 years. The Cubs on the other hand have 2 titles since 1876.

I guess it was really time for both sides to move on, but I could see the Yankees going back to how they were in the late '80s and the early '90s now, when they were no longer relevent.

With their payroll, I don't know that this will happen. They still have an all-star caliber lineup, and enough pitching to be a playoff team every year,
and they do tend to re-load most off-seasons.

Now, if you're referring to Joe Torre, then I agree.

Yeah, I'm with BD, as long as they have money they can depend on teams like the Marlins, Pirates, etc. to develop the talent and not be able to afford to keep them, then swoop in and steal them. And if I were them I think I'd call A-Rod's bluff, I mean with $30 mil or whatever he's going to command to redistribute elsewhere, you could get a couple star players.

Don't forget the money they will probably spend that isn't going to Roger Clemens.....I could be wrong, but I think Mussina's contract could be up as well.

Either way, point is, they will have lots of money to spend, and they are a good team that's short on pitching.
