i was just talking about the beloved in #football (IRC chatroom) and as the inevitable topic about the next bears HC came up someone tossed out the name rex ryan, and i was like "shit, you could do a lot worse than rex ryan (see marc trestman)" and that got me to thinking..... has rex ryan completely burned his NFL bridges? did he ruin his legacy with the last few years of meh-at-best J-E-S-T JEST JEST JEST!!!! football? would you guys welcome rex ryan in chicago?

i seem to remember it was not that long ago that this guy showed up and took a 9-7 jets team to the AFC championship game, then he turned around and had a 11-5 season en route to another AFC championship game, thus giving him an all-time playoff record of 4-2. of course after those early successes he went 8-8, 6-10, 8-8, and ultimately 4-12.... but when you consider that he made two AFC championship games with the sanchize aka mark sanchez quarterbacking his team and then he had an utter horseshit of a GM who had thoughts like "let's bring in tim tebow to lead this team and get some headlines!" when rex wanted no part of that and to his credit he didnt allow himself to get sucked into the tebow vortex even when it would have actually made sense to throw the kid into the fire to see if he truly is jesus reincarnate.

so yeah.... i can't say that i've watched jets football that closely over the last few years, but it's pretty much assumed that they're a joke of a franchise (i mean they were a playoff/ish team with chad fucking pennington for a few years!) and they're pretty much utter shit. idk how much say rex had in terms of personnel, but you figure he had to have some culpability about the franchise's inability to add impact players to rebound after their back-to-back AFC championship game runs... but that said, i think he did pretty well to have two 8-8 teams in his last 4 years, and it was really only this year where the wheels fell off. hell i think he had at least one or two other seasons where he was entering the season as dead man coaching and he ended up doing well enough to save his job, so we know the guy can deliver enough high-end-mediocrity to save his job when it's time....

so hey, am i right in thinking that you could (and probably will) do a lot worse than him when it comes to hiring the next bears coach?

The bolded is 100% false.

I suppose you could do worse than Rex, but that's not saying much.

yeah that's what i was thinking, but evidently he's an afterthought/no-thought-whatsoever becauseeeeeeeee [drum roll]

well #SlapMahFro. so much for that.... clearly PFT is right on the money with this one because florio didn't build his empire on supplying prostitutes to players like i assume jay glazer did. you know he's too down with the players to be anything less than at least a proper coke connection and/or a pimp. he has to do something for the players other than "get their message out" and i'm thinking it's drugs and/or pussy.

and see that's another reason to want rex ryan! when you get down to business aka the nitty gritty he's not about drugs and/or pussy.... he's about feet! seriously he digs the feet of pudgy middleaged housewives.... if that's his ultimate super-secret vice then holy shit you're taking a bold step forward from the not-too-distant-epoch when you had players who had a thug in the basement with assault weapons and pounds of weed in the freezer. what's worse? having your players presumably do a little bit of high-mid-level hustling on the side, or having your coach beside himself in tears knowing that they canceled that "the big shoe" movie that was gonna star kristen stewart, long a favorite of footfags all over the world (don't ask how i know this. don't ask why i know this. just know that i know this and, as always, you can have faith in your boy sini to tell you about the deep dark depraved corners of the universe that you're too upstanding a person to ever have to deal with =)

ah well c'est la vie. who's coaching the alouettes right now? will vegas give me good odds on them?

Here's why the Bears don't want Ryan-he has a personality. They do not want a Coach in the headlines.

I honestly think there's a lot of truth to this, but I wouldn't shed any tears over it. Rex is a mediocre head coach at best.

No tears shed. Not sure about Ryan has a head coach....maybe more of a DC.

Too much drama, invocations of Buddy's magic, "Bear attitude", "Bear weather", weird social media pictures... it's going to be a non-stop circus and very little win production.

except apparently for strong, assertive personalities that don't participate in Groupthink (such as Arians and Ryan).

Arians isn't currently available.

Ryan doesn't consider participating in success very important either of late.

I don't think Breeze was suggesting hiring Arians or Ryan specifically. More addressing the fact that the Bears don't like a big personality.

But since George and Ted are such great football minds, they should be able to pick a GM from their "list" that would provide a defensive minded coach the proper talent to win.

He needs someone in the administration to believe in him to get his foot in the door

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that former Bears coach Marc Trestman could be his choice to build the offense that Ryan never could while he was with the Jets.

Former San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman is expected to join Ryan in Buffalo, where he would coach the offense, according to a subsequent report by Schefter. As for current Bills defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, the team has "every intention" of keeping him, as reported by Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News

Almost as good as Lovie hiring him. The guy who the Bears wouldnt talk to going to get Trestman.

Schwartz is a damn good DC. He and Roman look like a really good staff for Rex.

Good day for Belichick.

he outlasts the Ravens and then finds out that he gets Rex 2x each year for the foreseeable future.

Win/Win.
