I took 30 seconds to look at Smoltz' numbers, and I think I now like him going in first time, whereas I was fine with him waiting a year before I took said 30 seconds.

Agreed. I also agree he should be, but for whatever reason, a couple of people will say no. It doesn't matter.

Johnson and Martinez in. Smoltz I am going to put on the borderline... I could see him getting 63% this year. No to the other first timers except Jermaine Dye who will certainly get at least 2 votes. I would guess Biggio gets in based on how close he got last time. Nobody else though (Piazza will get close to 69%.) Bagwell will regress. Clemens up to 45%, Bonds up to 41%.

I'm old, though I do appreciate that baseball is the sport best designed to be picked apart by statistics. That said, by the eyeball test, how is Tim Raines NOT in the HoF or at least, the HoF discussion? He was the NL equivalent of Rickey Henderson for many years (before joining the White Sox), and his .385 onbase % is pretty damn good. Dude was a threat to turn a walk/single into a double any time he got on 1st base. I thought he was a game changer.

Advanced metrics friends, please explain why Raines isn't already in.

I read an opinion this morning that held that Raines was HOF first seven years then declined as time went on and hung on too long at end.

I'm not but Biggio was a scrawny kid then became a basher (over 250 HR).

He has the numbers to be in but I certainly don't look at Biggio and remember him from his playing days and think " thats a HOF'er right there". Seems to be a compiler. Id put Raines in before him. Raines was a much more impactful player.

Exactly. To me, being a HOF'er means that you were the best at your position for an extended period of time. Biggio stuck around long enough to accumulate stats. He should be in the Hall of Very Good.
