Right, but Cabrera and Abreu and Trout, etc. are in those league averages. I'm not some big Bonifacio fan, but having a switch-hitter who can play all the positions isn't a negative.

Agreed.

The biggest thing is it's a harmless contract that will not handcuff the team like Rios and Dunn.

It's a fine signing. I have no problem with it. Unless he plays 120 games and gets 400 ABs.

I don't mind if he gets all those at-bats as a utility man. What I don't want is them penciling him in at second everyday. If you do that, you've killed his real value.

That said, he's a known quantity who can give you at least some offense. It would be great if Micah Johnson is as good as Dee Gordon. I certainly wouldn't count on that. Frankly, in today's game, if you're getting the kind of numbers from the other guys (Abreu, LaRoche, Garcia, and especially Flowers) that you hope, their best choice at second might be Sanchez. You can get away with that Belanger/Maxvill type hitter now if a guy is a Belanger/Maxvill type fielder. If the pitching is as strong as they think, you don't want a marginal fielder at second everyday. They turned a lot of double plays last year. It's easy to take that for granted.

Sanchez looked really fine with the glove to me, but it wasn't like I had my protractor and spray chart out.

You don't need those or anything else to evaluate defense. Your eyes work just fine.

So without making eye contact, Bill James just claimed in a shifty-eyed manner that the Sox bullpen cost them 10 (ten)games last year, and that the problem has been rectified in the off-season. Huh?

Unfortunately, he will be overused because Ventura sucks.

He might be fine as a platoon guy too.
But to be fair, if he plays a lot more than once a week - is that a Robin problem or a Hahn problem? Kinda seems to be a Hahn problem to me. Fill the holes with somebody else if you don't Bonafacio in there.

A platoon where he only plays against LHP probably gets him two starts per week. Maybe you reduce that a little and only play him against good LHP. So you are probably looking at 300-350 AB just as a platoon guy. I wouldn't extend him much more than that.

They will go with 11-12 pitchers. Then there are the 8 starters. Right now on the bench you have Viciedo, Bonifacio, backup catcher, and room for one more guy (probably Danks at this point).

They have to find a way to lose Viciedo for something.

I still think Viciedo will be gone, but there's no way that they are going to go with Bonifacio as the only backup infielder. What his acquisition has done is put Danks on the outs. I believe the last guy will be someone who can play a good defensive shortstop.

How does signing Bonifacio signal that Danks is gone?

I think he is suggesting that you don't really need a 5th outfielder with Bonifacio on the roster. Jordan will probably be on the AAA shuttle again

Exactly. And I think Danks only has one option left. The Sox have always had a great relationship with the Danks family. It wouldn't surprise me to see them trade Jordan to a team that has a better situation for him. He obviously doesn't fit with the White Sox now.

It would be addition by subtraction if somehow the Sox could rid themselves of Tank and John Danks

The only hope I have for him this year is that he is used in the 6th and 7th innings and not in pressure situations as he was forced into last year.

Relax. He is like 6-7 out of that bullpen now.

It looks like they're going to stick with Noesi in the rotation so it would be nice if they got another right handed set up man. Casey Janssen, Francisco Rodriguez and Rafael Soriano are still available and would be a nice upgrade from Guerra and it adds a veteran to help take pressure off Petricka/Webb/Putnam.

Bullpen guys are so volatile, you can't worry about a particular guy because he had a few awful innings last year. Guerra was pretty damn good for the Doyer, no reason he can't get right again. I heard someone just picked up Sergio Santos of the waiver wire.. you can always find a guy out of nowhere.

I'm not sure I believe that. Thinking like that is how you end up with Ronald Belisario, Matt Lindstrom and Maikal Cleto. If they're seriously trying to win they need at least a couple proven veterans in the bullpen. Right now Robertson is the only one they have.

I guess what I'm saying is that if Guerra sucks, you launch him and make sure you have some other arms stockpiled. I don't understand focusing your worry on one particular guy

No. His success had more to do with the 2 mph uptick in velocity. I sure hope that velo bump is still there but I have my doubts.

A bullpen is as strong as its weakest link. Guerra is the weak link.

These are the problems teams face when they don't clone 98 mph fire breathing bastards like your Cardinals do.

Going to be tough for Sox to over come the ex-cub factor in 2015. Look for a Darwin Barney signing next!
