While I understand the concerns of hirinig anyone who comes from the existing McBear factory, but had a realization.

If I worked somewhere, then left...you realize how good, or bad, the place was that you once came from. Going to say Andy Reid runs a very good orgnization. The guy has been part of some great teams/organizations/players. Now Ballard has been on the other side of the fence.

He is the only guy who knows what is wrong inside McHalas Hall and he then is going in eyes wide open with how to fix it, or he should.

Hiring Ballard is almost a last gasp for the McCaskeys, because if this guy doesnt work out, its over.

Ryan and McKenna would squeeze them out, maybe.

He really hasn't done anything. After Hatley left there were a lot of draft blunders and he was in the room when they were happening. I'm not sure how much he could have learned in 2 years with Reid.

Well, I figure by then she has to be dead? and things go for drastic change. Ballard 5 year deal gets her to 96? Gotta be close then

Why didn't the Bears have a general manager between Vainisi and Angelo?

The Hatley draft...as dumb as it was, was all about Jauron. Jauron chose most of the players, with Hatley giving him info.

But when you mention Hatley, imagine was assholes your employer must be for you to tell them you quit 2 weeks before the draft and for all practical purposes, you are the GM. It was Hatleys big "FU" to the whole ownership group. but they are so fucking insulated, they didnt even know it.

I didn't know that. We should hire Jauron then. He knows how to evaluate talent.

  I think Mama McCaskey replaced Michael for a reason.

jauron took #83 from Michigan.

Not going to totally shit on Jauron, really no option at that point. 2 weeks before draft your GM (basically) quits and is going to your rival (GB)

Just the fact he even stayed is kinda strange. I guess he didnt expect them to say OK?

I was think earlier, "well at least this guy knows what he's getting into." he should have the clout to fix things to some (small) degree.

Hate to say it but I am on the side of B and B. They are going to hire Ballard and they paid 300k to find a guy that was in the building for 13 years.

I know many people here will give them credit for hiring the Ernie Show, as if they did it for all the right reasons but we know thats not true.

Phillips will push Ballard hard, because Ballard isnt a threat to him and ted still is King shit, the guy who cuts the checks.

of course the McCaskeys are scared to upset Ted, he knows the code to press the PRINT button on the checks. What else would they do?

From all my sources ted is just not that smart a guy and is out of his league. However, the McCaskeys think he does a great job and there is the problem.

The unlimited potential of the Chicago Bears is held back by the McCaskey Phillips organization.

The shame is that Ballard might be the best GM of all time but the fan base will hate him as he worked for the Bears. I actually give him credit for leaving Bears and growing with Chiefs. Sometimes they come back stronger after having been let out to dry for Emery?

I agree this is similar to where Seacreast was going and there are worse hires than Ballard.

You also touched on a point I was making in a different thread regarding McCaskey and Phillips perception of success. Despite the nonsense they say about winning championships, success in their eyes is based on value of the franchise and money in the bank. Despite not winning, under Phillips they got a new stadium deal, had lines of people waiting to buy PSL for season tickets, had superstars to market (Urlacher, Hester, Forte), and corporate sponsors. That is why the McCaskey's foolishly look at the Phillips reign as "successful" and why Ballard having ties to that era will be seen as a positive.

My problem is they are still half-assing the football operations. There are better candidates with better credentials and that's who they should be bringing in. DeCosta is #1. He's a threat to Phillips, so it won't happen.

Maybe Ballard will be good....we can only hope. I guess the good thing is that Accorsi was a credible move and guys like Ross and Ballard are certainly better options than Angelo and Emery. I just wish they'd see the long-term $$ that winning will bring and pull out all stops for the best possible chance of winning.

Ballard is an absolutely horrible hire. No other way to spin it. It's because he fails to accomplish the one goal needed which is to get a new and different philosophy there. Of course it could work out. Hiring Jerry Angelo again could work out too.

This isn't about finding a capable GM. Ballard may very well be a capable GM. It is about the Bears becoming an organization that is the envy of most of the other teams in the league. The odds are almost 0 that Ballard will do this given that he has been a Bears employee for most of his career.

Brick, why would you expect change when the same people are in charge, it is not going to happen?

I don't think Rick expects change; he's simply stating that radical, systemic change is necessary if the Bears are to increase their chances of winning. While it's possible that Ballard could bring the Bears to a championship, it's also possible that you could hit the bullseye on a dartboard while blindfolded. That's all the Bears are doing now--blindly throwing darts and hoping for the best.
