This isn't about finding a capable GM. Ballard may very well be a capable GM. It is about the Bears becoming an organization that is the envy of most of the other teams in the league. The odds are almost 0 that Ballard will do this given that he has been a Bears employee for most of his career.

Brick, why would you expect change when the same people are in charge, it is not going to happen?

I don't think Rick expects change; he's simply stating that radical, systemic change is necessary if the Bears are to increase their chances of winning. While it's possible that Ballard could bring the Bears to a championship, it's also possible that you could hit the bullseye on a dartboard while blindfolded. That's all the Bears are doing now--blindly throwing darts and hoping for the best.

Oh trust me, I know. :D

It's simultaneously hilarious and depressing that the Tribune hasn't given serious attention to any other GM candidate than Ballard since Emery was fired.

From the outside, it looks like Accorsi was hired only to give this sham GM selection process the veneer of credibility while it has been rotten to the core from the outset.

If Ballard is hired, Bears fans should be outraged. But most fans will all be woofing it up next July for training camp and drinking the Kool-Aid when the season starts--until the team gets its ass kicked by the Packers again and again and again. I wonder if that's really what the McCaskeys want: a team that will only lose to the pack by 7 or 10 points rather than 40. Rebuilding is painful, so let's just achieve the appearance of respectability without actually having a credible organizational plan or being fundamentally worthy of respect.

Fair point, but this is like an extreme level of not changing at all. It's like they almost don't understand why they fired Angelo, and then Emery.

Well, they knew the results weren't good. But the problem is that they don't know WHY the results weren't good.

Other than the word "absolutely" I agree with everything you're saying. The fascination with the KC Chefs is perplexing to me as well, I don't see much or why to be impressed with them.

This has little to do with the Chiefs, and everything to do with the fact that Emery and Ballard were former Bear employees. The McCaskeys and Phillips don't know anyone else.

For sure, it's as if KC is where McHalas people go to fill out their resume.

I do agree with you. I'm against the Ballard hire for the same reasons. You cannot solve a problem with someone who's been a long-time part of it. I'm also acknowledging that Accorsi does have a good resume and NFL credibility and there are indications that Ballard has "some" interest elsewhere in the league.

I'm not sure "interest from around the league" is a good way to gauge a candidate's quality. For instance, Marc Trestman was a finalist for the Colts job before they hired Chuck Pagano. And everybody wanted Dave Wannstedt the year the Bears got him.

This is why the lack of football knowledge inside the Bears organization is such a problem. There's no one there to discern between the good candidates and those who are simply "hot" candidates. Accorsi is supposed to be playing that role, but we have no idea what his true function is in the GM process and how well he remains connected around the NFL.

Good Point. I'm comparing to Phil Emery who wasn't a consideration anywhere in the NFL and there was a collective "huh"?
Again...I'm against Ballard. I'm just convinced he's getting hired...and that is unfortunate.

Question is did Pace win, or did Ballard scare Teddy?

I would love to know. What type of demands did he make? Sounds like a Ted hire.

If I worked somewhere, then left...you realize how good, or bad, the place was that you once came from. Going to say Andy Reid runs a very good orgnization. The guy has been part of some great teams/organizations/players. Now Ballard has been on the other side of the fence.

He is the only guy who knows what is wrong inside McHalas Hall and he then is going in eyes wide open with how to fix it, or he should.

Hiring Ballard is almost a last gasp for the McCaskeys, because if this guy doesnt work out, its over.

What the hell are you talking about, Seacrest?

Based on what Gabriel and Bernstein are reporting, Big Fan's "new Ballard spin" was absolutely correct.

It sounds like Ballard knows the organization too well, a point that scares Sweaty Teddy.

His post states that Ballard will get a five year deal.

This after he unequivocally stated that Ballard would get the job. For the very reasons he is now stating that he didn't get the job.

Are you unable to read it?
