Maybe the Bears reputation as a fucked up mess of an organization with lousy management IS in fact hurting their ability to recruit.

Kubiak is a tribesman. Did he really have a chance with the McCaskey's?

 I don't doubt that. And the decision to keep Cutler has been made. Not by Pace either. Part of the reason Pace is here is because Phillips and McCaskey could bully him into keeping Cutler. Guys like Kubiak and Ballard are too sharp for that. Cutler has caused more guys to be fired than Donald Trump.

Is that true? I thought he was my tribesman, not that the two are mutually exclusive.

If you keep Cutler, is there any reason not to keep Marshall

tossing jump balls to a guy that increasingly runs like Big Chief Parish doesn't sound too appealing to me.

He had a significant ankle injury that he played through...and still was the best WR on the field most of the time.

Sorry, but I have a hard time buying into this narrative. Pace is young and had already been sought after by other teams over the last 2 years or so as an up and coming guy and had a cush job with The Saints to return to if he didn't like what he was hearing.

I can't see how anyone connects the 'bullying' Pace into making decisions dots. It literally makes no sense at all.

If he keeps Cutler around it will be because he is another dumbass that came along and thought that he could be the one to make it work. And I don't think there's really any more to it than that.

Agreed.

Pace wasn't a reach hire. He had other options.

I'm not suggesting he was a "reach" hire. I'm saying if he had insisted Cutler had to go he would not be in Chicago.

Case has 100% control unless he doesn't in certain instances.

By your post, you seemed to imply he's not 'sharp' enough to position his candidacy as one that's viable and getting rid of Cutler and/or Pace could be bullied by the team on that issue.

Hopefully he's smart enough to figure out a way to get Cutler out of town even though he told the "brain" trust that he would do everything to make it work with Cutler.

Here's how:

Going into the interview process Ballard was the clear frontrunner. After his interview where he stated Cutler had to go (among other things) that all changed.

Pace was willing to grab the $5MM on the table (or whatever it was) and say what he had to say to get it. No shame in that. I'd do the same thing.

I think he's younger and more pliable than the other guys. You wouldn't hire Belichick and ask him to report to Phillips. So you're looking for guys who are willing to report to Phillips. You want to keep Cutler. You're not going to hire a guy who is adanant about getting rid of him.

Exactly. But I wouldn't if I thought I could go elsewhere without that compromise. Cutler is likely to get Pace and "his" coach fired too.

I see they are bringing in the D Coordinator from Detroit tomorrow. I'd like them to interview the
D Coordinator from Seattle, although I don't know that much about him. I realize they would like
to get this done sooner rather than later and may not wait for the Seahawks guy to be available.

The thing you're ignoring is, GM candidates don't take jobs unless they think they can succeed. You only get one chance. So if Pace doesn't have control over what to do with Cutler, and the Bears wanted him to do the opposite of what he wanted, he wouldn't take the job. It's the same reason he turned down the Jets.

You just don't take a GM job unless it's the opportunity you want. You only get one chance.

I think we all understand that. I'm sure he thinks he can probably "succeed" at least in relative Bears terms. Plus pretty much set himself up for life financially. If that means dealing with Cutler for another year or two, he was willing to do it.

Someone may have mentioned this but why has Billick been blackballed? I'd hire him in a second.

Another guy who wants to do it his way. I have no idea why you wouldn't want to talk to him.
