I follow Arlington pretty closely during the season, and I try to keep up on Churchill as well, but I'm hardly an expert on the ponies. I was just wondering if any of you guys know of a quick primer or something that I could spend some time on to learn the current state of the sport; I read the DRF from time to time, but I need something a little bit more systematic. I'm trying to get a leg up on next season.

If you are most concerned about Arlington racing, follow Keeneland and/or Turfway. Similar surface(Poly). If you are looking to increase your knowledge overall, there are a few places to look - barntowire.com will give good general information. To me, handicapping is more learning things to look for and building on them so get your ass to the Otb and lose some money!

There are so many different angles in horse racing to you could look for it's scary. Jockey changes, running style change, tightening horses (running a sprint horse over a distance on the front end), 2nd race off layoff, Lasix.....You could write a book

If you can find a 'horse owner' there is nothing better.

A guy in my frat in college his family owned horses and he taught me how to read a program and what to look for, the weight, lasix, etc. obviousely there is no surefire way, but we usually did pretty well when we went to the track. Email Harry. His family owned Cryptoclearance and might still own a few.

I can tell you that my guys will not go the track without me to read the programs and in August in Vegas we had a very good day of just sitting in the Book at the rio and wagering on race after race, I think we won about $1500 total for 4 of us, as we pooled our money. I made the picks and they went to the windows.

Find a horse owner and see what they can teach you. No better education.

I will say that 2 years ago I was at Arlington and a horse was running named after the Edison Park Inn. (EPI) and a "guy" who might know some 'tings' if you know what I am saying, told me to drop a 'C note ' on him to win. I am sure the guy did not read the program, and knows little about the horses. And it won paid about $18 to win? and he cashed in. No I didn't bet on it, but that one always had me wondering to this day.
