Started back working downtown again, which means lots of fun adventures to try out new food. Figured I would just list places rather than start new threads for each place. Here it goes...

Brown Bag Seafood

Right across from Millennium Park on Randolph. Its a bit expensive and you don't get a lot of food, but the fish tacos are really good. I've tried the fish tacos with blackened dover soul and blackened trout. They also have five different tater tot mixes. And a selection of a few beers.

The Gage

On 24 S. Michigan. First time I tried poutine and a scotch egg. Venison burger is supposedly out of this world. At some point, I may just blow $45 so I can say that I ate a 10oz roasted elk rack.

Eggys

Brunch place. Again by Millennium Park. Omelet wasn't anything special. Potatoes were okay.

Shake Shack

Off Michigan and Ohio. Apparently its a cult following in their NY location. Burger was fantastic. Fries and shake sucked. Way too expensive for what you get.

They're a great app if anyone is interested in the recipe. ( too lazy to type it out if nobody really cares)

surprisingly not many decent restaurants in/around the loop. Bratwurst at the Berghoff bar? cheddar burger at UB Dogs.

I'm not a big fan of the burgers at UB Dogs. The Joey Dog is the thing to get there. Bacon and egg sandwich is good too. Joey himself can be a little disconcerting to me when I go in there all surly first thing in the morning. "HEY! HOW YA DOIN', BROTHER? HOW WAS YOUR WEEKEND? YOU ENJOYING THIS FINE WEATHER WE'RE HAVING?"

I enjoyed Russian Tea Time but you're not getting outta there for less than $ 50/head. I like Italian Village on the top floor. not that the food is great but the atmosphere is terrific. The bar area would be kickass without the TVs.

I've been by there 20 times and always think "that looks like the kind of place I would like."

Alas I mostly bring lunch since A) there's nobody at work I'd want to share my time with, and B) I don't want to drop $15-$20 for a decent sit down lunch.

I really didn't like Monk's burgers. I'll take Exchequer or Miller's over Monk's any day.

Yeah, its one of those "try it once" things.

I'm probably going to just limit to one day of the week for trying new places; otherwise, I'm going to go poor quickly.

Though it's not really Downtown, it's close enough to my office in the far north end of the Loop that I get there quite a bit, Club Lago is one of my favorites. Jamie the Bartender is a fabulous babe. If only St. Ignatius would produce more restauranteurs and less lawyers!

A few that won't break the bank:

Sit Down:

Heaven on Seven (in the Garland Building).
Ceres (in the CBOT)
Lloyds (Wacker and Madison)

Carry Out:

Cafecito (Wells and Monroe, and also Congress and State)
Skrine Chops (Van Buren and Financial, across from the CBOE)
The Roost (Food Truck, usually Clark and Monroe or Sears Tower). Food is great, but service has been spotty lately as more people find out about them and create long waits.

Club Lago is great and the twin owners at least pretend to know me. It is down the block from 400 Superior court so I always try to schedule cases for the 11 am call and go to lunch there afterwards. Not great food but solid Italian fare with a great bar.

Some people seem to like The Green Door down the block from Lago.

There are plenty of fantastic restaurants downtown, just not many affordable ones. Even the old Marquette Inns around the loop seem to have closed up or attempted to go upscale.

Heaven on Seven, Miller's Pub, etc. are all similarly solid places.

Find out where government employees go. They always seem to find the good, cheap eats.

Did Tavern on the Park off Randolph and Michigan on Thursday. Really good salad. Need to go back and check out the rest of the menu.

Heaven on Seven is Dr. Ken's go-to restaurant for all Dr. Ken-type occasions.
