2nd year in a row, I hear the host city mayor bitching about the whole experience.

Last year New jersey, this year, Glendale.

First of all, nobody forces you to have the Super Bowl in your city. You request the Super Bowl!

Second, if it didnt work out well the first time, why do it again?

And if the whole funding of stadiums thing is bad for your city, WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING IT? Bitching about no attedance for Sox/Dodgers complex, having to support Coyotes facility and now the Super Bowl? Which, all reports were that the City didnt do its part on the utilities end of the deal, when the state built it.

The city had the chance to work with the NFL and book some hotels for a normal rate, for the NFL's people and the hotels chose to go for the big money and gauge the fans.

Guess what. if people are going to pay big money in AZ, its not going to be to stay in Glendale!

The Mayor of Glendale and New Jersey both made a big deal about the NFL not offering them even 1 ticket to attend, and the lack of other community involvement. From the fire department not seeing a thank you, the cops and other city workers. I guess the Glendale Fire dept made a bunch of food for the extra security and help the Super Bowl people need and they want the NFL to reimburse them? once again, not even asked of them...although it would be nice.

Maybe it is a fianancial loss for the city to host this, but I would assume someone calculates this before you bid on the game?

What I read was not the usual process that puts them in red but the newer extra security. State and Feds do not help out with all the blackhawks and ridiculous security we need these days. The community and state make money but do not help the city with costs?

Thats the mayor bitching. The city itself, obviousely doesnt make any money, the businesses do or dont.

In Arizona in general, they are all about 'The Season", Dec 1 to April 1. Hotel rates in general are 3 -4 times what they normally are. The NFL shops around until they find a hotel that essrntially gives them a deal for all the NFL's people. none of the Glendle hotels wanted to give them a discount. instead they went for the consumer mark up.

And even if extra security exists, it is a cost that needs to be figured in then. If you dont think it is a good idea, dont do it. Dont cry afterwards.

Get the renovation in Miami done, get a new stadium in San Diego and LA.

6 year rotation of:

New Orleans
Dallas
Arizona
Miami
LA
San Diego

Nobody else needs to apply. Nobody else should host it.

I agree don't bitch. Glendale is not "losing" in general or they do not do it. But perhaps the costs of some if it should be (Obama word) shared.

Glendale probably is LOSING, Scottsdale is KILLING IT right now! Barret Jackson auction, WM Open, Craft Beer Week, every establishment in Old Town is packed. That area is making nothing but money right now. This is why the Mayor of Glendale is pissed. Everyone is in Scottsdale. The fact he is even surpised is amazing.

Ditka opened a new place close to the stadium and he even he is doing events in Scottsdale with Jaworski. lol

When New Orleans went to shit, I wanted the NFL to buy the Superdome. That city does it right. Great place, great party, great dome, needed some upgrades.

It might have been a smart financial deal. Can lease it back to the Saints and dont need to worry about this setup every year. They could have bought more building on the other side of canal at the time and made a NFL Hotel.

Replace Dallas with Tampa (or just drop it) and we are in complete agreement.

As an NHL fan, Glendale has been top-of-mind for us over the last five years, and let me tell you, they might be the dumbest motherfuckers in America.

bigfan wrote:

THEY CAN'T HELP THEMSELVES. THEY'RE REALLY, REALLY STUPID. They've committed almost a quarter of a billion dollars to keep the Coyotes because they're afraid that if the Coyotes aren't there, it'll be hard to pay off the construction bonds on the arena. Now I'm not a real estate maven like you, but I can figure out that this math doesn't make any sense, not when you've paid your tenant $25MM the first two years and $15MM each year after that in order to finish paying off $220MM in bonds. And on top of all this, the NHL is happy to help them make these bad decisions because they like having a team or two that can't make a dime, because that throws the curve for everyone else and lowers the salary cap, and because if someone is offering you 25 million dollars to pay rent, you don't turn that down.

What seems to have happened in Glendale is that some ambitious developers in a time of ambitious development convinced a fringe-y working-class/middle-class exurb that they were going to become the new sports/entertainment capital of the Valley, notwithstanding the fact that most of the wealth and entertainment stuff is in Scottsdale or other points east of Phoenix. The developer behind that whole Westgate district went bankrupt, got out of the business, and left everyone else to clean up his mess after the economy went bad, and now you have a government of elected yokels and appointed hacks trying to double down on every stupid decision they've ever made, leading up to getting embarrassed with this Super Bowl.

Nah, too relaxed, takes too long to get there. New Orleans is the spot.

Let me just add indy to the good list. Something to be said for having all events downtown.
