Any recollection of the Jensen House in Antioch, corner of 83 and 173? We'd go to breakfast there on the way up to Mukwonago. Huge Belgian waffles. Always a treat.

Of course, my favorite bygone joint is the one and only PEEP'S at the corner of Thomas and Rand.

I miss the Golden Bear Pancake House. I used to go to the one off of North & Harlem as a youth.
A few years later,the one on Cumberland with my teenaged buddies.

I miss the Black Eyed Pea (I think it was called that)...was a cajun type restaurant on Rand Road where the Smashburger is now by Trader Joe's...that was another popular dinner out option with my grandparents when I was a kid. Also the place across the street where the bank is now...

Now that I think about it, all the places I really liked to eat when I was younger are all closed and have been replaced by Chipotle, Panda Express, and fucking Noodles.

That's the one...when I was 21 and working out of an office in Vernon Hills, the place had a bad attached to it that had some awesome drink specials...popular after work spot for us...but it closed like 8 months later...

Jimmys: When the kids were little my wife worked Sundays. Sometimes when the Bears were playing I would take them up there for hot dogs and then give them quarters for the game room (which they loved) while I had a couple beers and watched the game.

Down the Hatch: REALLY.GOOD.PIZZA (and pitchers of beer).

Rapps: Almost literally next door to Jimmys (a Firestone sits between them). Maybe ate there once; I don't remember it either way, but I think it always was well-reviewed and it was there forever. After Rapps closed I recall the property had a short stint as a Hungarian restaurant. Now I think it is an Italian place with a strange bar.

Yeah,I think I took my wife to the Italian place. I'm pretty sure it was on NW Highway. She said the food sucked but I thought it was ok.

I can't think of the name of the Hungarian place but I believe it used to be on Diversey and Central before moving out there. The food was pretty good but it didn't last too long on Northwest Highway.

If a place had a game room, that was my place as a kid! HACKNEYS! Used to think the Burger was huge, then I want back in my 30's and realized the bun was just big...lol...and the onion loaf made me crap in about 23 seconds!

One of the few old school food joints from my yute that is still open is Russells on Thatcher rd in Elmwood Park. Place hasn't changed a bit. Mrs. Scorehead and I still eat here every other month. Brings back great memories of going there as a kid with my parents.

Used to go to the Hackney's in Lake Zurich all the time for Irish fare in an Alpine atmosphere. Eventually, we went so often that I couldn't bear to go back, but now that you mention the onion loaf -- even with the part about crapping yourself! -- I really really want to have some onion loaf.

For me, Family Table at NE corner of Jefferson and Larkin in Joliet. That place was printing money!!!! Did the old shutting down for remodeling and sat empty for like a year. Think it is called Big Apple now.

Anyone else remember Alemar's, corner of Dundee and Quentin near some forest preserves in Palatine? I miss simple Greek places like that. They gave you food. I mean, they really gave you food.

Horvath's was our place for graduations as kids...I couldn't wait to get out of there after a three-hour afternoon meal.

There was a place my dad used to take me called "Al Morlock's Victorian House" or something like that. Was supposed to be haunted or something...I think my dad just liked to drink there.

A few others I didn't see:

Dieterle's (German restaurant in Elgin)
Plush Pup (hot dog joint on Cumberland)
The Viking (steak house on Roosevelt in Wheaton/Winfield)

Notice how big all those places are that closed down. Stand alone buildings, they pay and maintain the parking lot, the building, roof etc.

When I first moved to the far northern burbs in 1991 I had just joined the golf team and my new teammates
took me to a restaurant out in Vernon Hills by the mall called Hamburger Hamlet. It didn't last long and
actually turned into something else. No idea what the space is now if it is even still there. Doug might
know. Pretty sure this wasn't a Chicago institution but looking on their website the franchise looks to have
been completely wiped off the entire map.
