How on earth did players manage not to do anything of the sort pre Gastineau? Unless you count the time Merlin Olsen scored the FTD endorsement after he pulled his drawers down and took that tulip out of his asscrack after sacking Fran Tarkenton and laid it on his chest while he was on the ground.
Some of it is exuberance and some is self promotion. They play the game for such a short period of time and try to make as much money as possible. It is harmless. What's crazy is many of the same people used to love the antics of a guy like Ali and other older athletes but now they complain when a younger generation does things that are less controversial.
