I know he hasnt lived up to that name, but sources (KapMan) claiming the interest in him has fallen enough that the Cubs are in the game.

Doesnt hurt to have Madden in on this one.

I think wanting him and being able to afford him are the issue.

If you look at his numbers, he's clearly in decline. If you sign him to a four or five year deal, you're going to be sorry. If somehow he is willing to take, say $20 million on a one year deal, and you're really trying to compete, I think it would be okay.

Anything over 2 years would look really bad. I feel the same about Lester though.

Lester is a different kind of pitcher though. Being left-handed goes a long way. Lefthanders are winners overall and that's largely because of guys like Lester and Buehrle.

I will say that the old White Sox philosophy of no more than three years for any pitcher is a sound one, but rather impractical in today's game if you're serious about competing. The game and the money has grown. Having guys signed to large deals that can no longer perform on the back end is just a cost of doing business. But you don't have to walk right into it as you likely would be with Shields. And that's probably why he's still available.

I've always been a big fan and wanted him BUT I agree a long term deal would be nuts.
I'd be willing to blow him away with a 2 at 25 AV or front loaded 3 at 20 AV while the everyday lineup is still cheap.
If you're the Cardinals or Giants I don't see how you don't do the same type of deal.

Add him to the current Cubs staff and great young pen.....shit just got real THIS year.

I am sorry, I did not realize I was supposed to know where all Free Ajents live.

Did I not state it in my original post though?

Not sure about that as a Cubs fan. If I am remembering correctly, that last big name FA lefthanded pitcher the Cubs signed was the Danny Jackson. The Cubs got a grand total of 5 wins out of him.

I don't see the Cards even trying very hard for Big Game....they still think Jaime Garcia will magically heal. Not to mention that a winning lefty is not in the Cardinal DNA. The last time we had one we traded him away to Philly for Rick Wise.

I think the Giants snag him.

Shields is not in decline. He's a workhorse and will age better than Lester. I will be as excited as I've been about a Cubs team since 2004 if they get Shields.
