Not a big surprise but Feder is reporting changes @ WGN Radio involving Roe Conn, John Williams, Bill & Wendy, etc.

Conn doing the 3-7 p.m. shift. Garry Meier's old WGN time slot.

http://www.robertfeder.com/

From Feder...

Not rumor, but fact: Roe Conn, the veteran Chicago broadcaster whose 25-year run on WLS AM 890 ended last October, is about to sign on as afternoon personality at WGN AM 720, sources said.

The Tribune Media news/talk station is expected to announce this week that Conn will replace Bill Leff and Wendy Snyder from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Leff and Snyder have held the afternoon shift since they succeeded Garry Meier last May.

If all goes as planned, Leff and Snyder will return to the late-morning midday slot they previously occupied, and John Williams will move to weekends, according to WGN insiders.

Todd Manley, vice president of content and programming at WGN, declined to comment.

Conn, 50, turned up as a guest on Steve Cochran’s morning show Monday, but no mention was made of his impending employment at the station. Conn’s agreement was negotiated by his longtime agent, George Hiltzik of New York-based N.S. Bienstock Inc.

As far back as August 2013, Conn was identified here on the “wish list” of Jimmy deCastro, president and general manager of WGN. But Conn was not available while he was under contract to Cumulus Media, parent company of WLS. That deal expired December 31.

Conn continues as a regular contributor to “Windy City Live,” the 11 a.m. weekday talk show on ABC-owned WLS-Channel 7. He recently announced his engagement to Deanna Beise, but no date has been set for the wedding.

With the loss of Chicago Cubs baseball broadcasts to CBS Radio all-news WBBM AM 780, WGN bosses are looking to attract potentially displaced news listeners by beefing up the station’s news content, particularly during afternoon drive. When it comes to handling breaking news on radio, Conn is among the most adept practitioners in the business.

In the latest Nielsen Audio survey, WGN ranked 20th in afternoons with a 2.1 percent share and cumulative weekly audience of 255,700. Among listeners between 25 and 54, WGN tied with WLS in afternoons for 28th place with a 0.9 share and weekly cume of 81,500.

He kind of has that punch me face, but I always found him to be entertaining.

The world has passed him by. Nobody wants to hear from some henpecked potbellied old man who watches network-TV shows where contestants are sequentially voted out of singing/dancing contests and doesn't like "the ethnics." At least I don't think anyone should.

It'd be nice if this business could develop new talent, but nah, fuck that, let's just ride out Steve Dahl and Roe Conn to the bitter end.

CH, they need to hire Trestman to grow the man. Would you listen to Dale Decker live? That could be entertaining for 15 minutes especially if they have one of those live camera studio feeds. The audience is thinking, "when will he erupt?"

I don't need talk radio. I listen to the voices in my head.

IMO - Conn's best days were with Garry Meier @ WLS.

Other than that, he is moderately entertaining at best.

And if Meiers best day, or only day, was with Dahl that puts Roe Conn in Leary area.

Roe Conn's best days were when he was doing the Last Sane Man bit during the O.J. Simpson trial. Worked then, but damn, dude, we're going on twenty years. That he's doing conservative talk in a city with a Democratic mayor who acts like a Republican kind of puts him in a bad spot. What do you do with that? Talk about Dancing With The Stars a lot, apparently.

He was probably "encouraged" to discuss the dancing stuff because of the ABC tie in?

He was a frequent visitor on Windy City Live where he exchanged witty quips with a Ryan Chiaverini.
That ride is probably at an end as now he is at WGN.

ABC hasn't owned WLS-AM for years. You can tell because the place went to shit. It's down to like three guys and a janitor. I think the sales staff is a robo-caller. I think the receptionist is a dog.

I think it's just that he's a boring middle-aged white guy broadcasting to other boring middle-aged white guys, and that's the kind of stuff BMAWGs watch. My dad watches over-the-air networks in prime time because That's What You Do. His complaints that American Idol doesn't do enough to connect with his demographic are somehow both reasonable and inscrutable at the same time.

I had heard of Roe Conn but had never actually heard him. I've listened to his show a few times on the way home from work, and I imagined him sounding differently. His personality, sense of humor, and delivery remind me of an over-caffeinated Steve Cochran.

Connor McKnight is getting a fair amount of air time on his show. He's there doing sports updates but chimes in now and then.

I did hear part of a relatively funny bit where the contestants had to guess whether Bruce Rauner dropped the G from ING words in his State of the State speech. He mostly did, as in the Bargainin' Table.

They do regular sports updates on his afternoon show? What, every half hour? Does Connor chime in on sports only or does he talk politics and world events? Does he still sigh a lot?

I haven't listened enough to answer your questions but he seems to chime in on anything.

Roe always tries to look edgy or dangerous in his promotional photos. He's about as dangerous as a cup of applesauce.

I often think that Mike Greenberg talks too fast, but Roe Conn talks about twice as fast (it's actually hard to understand what he's saying at times) and when he gets excited he sounds like Jay Leno with his noots in a vice.

He's also obsessed with Donald Trump to the point where it seems like he can't go for more than 10 or 15 minutes without talking about him. Over the course of the last few months his show has gotten to be less an less of an option for me while flipping around the dial.

The times I have listened I haven't heard Connor chiming in as much has he had been earlier in the year. Maybe all of his energy goes in to preparations for The Beat.

Are Roe's ratings good?

It's WGN...the bluehairs probably still think Kathy and Judy just finished and Spike O'Dell is running late, so they don't want to change the channel in case they miss him.

And now, the rest of the story.
