You are not going to get sufficient ratings with a national show in Chicago. It will either be branded an East Coast Radio mouthpiece or turn into a talk format with people about calling in about SEC football. The vast majority of listeners will tune it out in this market. As soon as baseball gets going, there are things to talk about every day. I agree that Bears rehash gets old with only one game per week, but it's better than Patriots talk all day.

Its tough when you start talking Giants Draft picks, or what the AZ Cardinals need, or Jerry Jones draft board.

The score is the alternative to that National talk and I think it has paid off for them. To then stick a national talk show in the middle of the day, wouldnt be so smart. Would love to see it and see how The self proclaimed success of the Dan Bernstein show falls like a rock in the ratings.

Only in passing RPB. If they go on for more than 30 minutes, my interest passes.

I'm all for national sports coverage if it means less Bears talk.

We will see. I think Rome's format of short sweet hits from him, callers and some big guests it the only way I like a national show.

Right. The distinction between 670 The Score and ESPN 1000 (because that's what you have to compare) all these years has been national programming or lack thereof. The Score is Portillo's while 1000 is the fill-in-the-blank national chain. If Rome is part of the The Score's lineup, that all can be thrown out the window.

I like Rome.

Would not be intersted in him on the Score at all. Would definitely make me consider 1000 more for middays

I don't. I can listen to ESPN 1000 from 5-10am if I want to hear about other (East Coast) teams.

no interest in national sports. none. I barely have enough interest in Chicago sports to tune in once in a while.

Fair enough. I like to hear it broken down radio style sometimes though.

What?

Who are you even talking about? ESPN? If so, I strongly disagre.

ESPN covers football pretty fairly overall because football is king. They'll do 5 segments in a given day about the Raiders coaching vacancy.

The Patriots have been by far the best team for the last 15 years, it stands to reason they get a lot of coverage.

Its nothing like the Yankee Red Sox baseball thing

you know we now have these things called "the internets" and "mobile devices" that would allow us to rather easily pick up just about any major mainstream national sports talk show if we wanted. say, how have you been listening to jim rome over the years anyways?

radio's a weird medium in today's short-attention-span theatre of instant gratification/reaction and of course omnipresent critics. like bigfan's said it's borne of habit and ritual and "HEY AT LEAST THESE GUYS ARE FROM CHICAGO" is one low common denominator that can appease some low low level of listener that you technically have to have. people just like to leave the radio on in the background because it reminds them that the world hasn't ended yet. that's where having people from your town comes in handy.

from there, radio also is funny in that by and large just about every time you get into a talk show you'll realize that the more you actually get to know the host/s the less you'll actually like them, thus radio is often about a time and a place.... a fleeting flight of fancy fortified by fortuitous foraging for fans in the form of ALS BUILDING 101--- a class no doubt available someday at the dan bernstein school of broadcasting @ [INSERT PRESTIGIOUS SPONSOR/UNIVERSITY HERE], because in the end you have to find some really fucked up people to be that everyday appointment-radio core as your natural career arc pushes you towards its ultimate destination: becoming a caricature of yourself as you transition from m-jeff to "what would it be like to be m-jeff's boss?"

Do they not have local sports stories on this internet thing?

I mean, you guys are essentially saying you'd rather hear Mully breakdown the Bears secondary depth than hear a Colin Cowherd type break down The Western Conference.

That's fine. But the whole "hey bro, what about the internet for natl news" isnt really an answer

To clarify, the only team outside of Chicago that I like and is discussed at all are the Patriots...I have enjoyed them since the Bledsoe days.

Outside of them, the only out of market teams I really follow are hockey teams...

BTW, I HATED Rome when I first heard him. He was on ESPN middays.

But once they put him on late night and Id be playing PS2 and listening to ESPN radio, he started growing on me.

I dont think anyone could listen to one Rome show and love it. There are too many inside jokes and he sells his joking statements so realistically you come away thinking he's crazy.

anyway, I think I might start listening again. Been off Carolla lately. I think that has run its course for the most part.

This my problem with him.

I can't or don't want to listen that much and I abhor shows that you need some sort of primer to even understand.

Understandable. I only fell into fandom because I was too lazy to turn the station and listened as I went to bed.

Some of his "guy" bits are really funny though. (gym guy, golf guy, corvette guy)

The idea is that you use a local medium for local programming to serve your local audience. If people in Chicago elect to get content that doesn't concern Chicago, they can get that for their various out-of-town teams on their own time through the internet rather than through a radio signal that covers the Chicago area.

Rome is kind of the west-coast version of ESPN, which I find even less interesting than the regular east-coast fare.
