Have you guys noticed this practice being forced on us by some restaurants these days?

They do this at Honey Butter Fried Chicken and I find it offensive. Basically, you stand in line at HBFC, order your food and then when you pay they turn the computer around to face you and you are given the choice of tip you want to leave and the choices are obnoxious. 20%, 15%, 10% or you can fill in a custom amount. Keep in mind that this is the type of place where you don't have a waitress. You order and pay, you get seated at a table and then someone brings out your food. That's the only interaction. They don't come back and ask how things are or if you need anything.

From my experience, places like this I think its appropriate to leave a dollar or two on the table when you leave. But, to be asked to leave 20% is insulting and obnoxious. I also think being asked to tip before you've experienced the service is wrong and insulting.

I always refuse to give a tip in advance and then I feel like I'm being judged by the counter guy when he spins the computer back around to see what I did.

Next time I'm gonna tell him how fucking stupid and obnoxious that is.

That's how I usually handle tipping in places like this. A buck or two per person (depending on the price of the meal) is fine.

That's ridiculous. I would be afraid NOT to with the implication being they most certainly will spit in my food if I don't give a decent tip.

I don't think that kind of place should get any tip. Maybe if its a large take-out order, but that would be about it. Instead of them bringing the food out to you, they could easily call numbers and have you pick it up.

Bartenders, waiters/waitresses, barbers, food delivery guys, cabbies...they get tips. Somebody who punches a cash register then walks 20 feet with a tray? No.

And yes I think its mildly insulting to ask you to tip a % when you haven't even eaten yet.

If a place tried getting me to pay the tip before eating, it would be the last time I visited said establishment.

So you pay + tip and tip in a manner that they know your tip amount before they prepare your food? Image

Tipping is insanely discriminatory. People get paid different amounts to do the same job based on factors such as gender/race/appearance. It's amazing in today's hyper-PC climate that tipping isn't regarded as a hate-crime.

I think going by the responses to tipping threads here and reactions to folks when out that I generally tip well/over tip.

Difficult to do in Chicago, where anything less than 20-25% earns a derisive sniff from a waiter who took forever to get your menus and coffee/water; took a smoke/social media break out back for 20 minutes while you waited to order; then chatted up some friends while your food sat under the warming lights for 10 minutes--causing your steak to go from rare to medium by the time you're half-way through; and then doesn't refresh any drinks so you have to harass the busboy to get water refills; before making you sit with finished/half-eaten plates in front of everyone for another 10 minutes; and then bringing the check over and fucking off to who knows where for another 30 minutes before you finally flag down a manager and shove a wad of cash at em and leave.

No idea why Chicago waitstaff are such entitled fucks. New York it's still 15-20% and when you tip over that they are (or at least appear to be) genuinely appreciative.

Never heard of this practice, and agree it's offensive...it may even be illegal. Normally a restaurant can only pay sub-minimum wage rates if the waitstaff gets tips. I wonder if the owner is paying low wages and then coercing tips from customers.

This concept is insane to me, and there is no way I am leaving a tip prior to eating for some person just punching in my order.

Ordering pizzas online and filling out the tip ahead of time have people trained for this to seem normal.

Its not

yea i do that (for pizza/online) even if i do have cash handy, just to have the transaction completed. but in that case there's a lot less that can go wrong...i mean really all dude needs to do to get a favorable tip is show up in a reasonable amount of time, and for the pizza to be hot

for a waiter/waitress dining-in situation there are tons more things that could possibly go wrong and affect a potential tip

Enjoy your Nut Butter Fried Chicken brought to you with a wry smile by the server after issuing your objection.

There's nothing wrong with greasing a few palms beforehand at a nice joint.

The place is a madhouse. I seriously doubt the guy at the front desk is taking the time to inform the cook in back that so and so out of the 8000 people seemingly in there didn't leave a tip in advance so spit in his food.

Also, that ignores the possibility that a tip might be coming at the end of the meal.

Dude, computers. It's all automated. When your order is transmitted back to the kitchen it's automatically color coded by tip level.

Green = good tip. Don't mess with the food. Give em extra fries and fresh chicken.
White = normal tip. Don't mess with the food but don't go out of your way to make it good.
Yellow = piss level tip.
Brown = you know what to do.

The real question is do you tip the guy who fixes your furnace at 11pm and gives the family heat on a -5 degree night.

I tip the guys that deliver appliances somewhere within an hour of their scheduled 6 hour window, so yeah, I probably would.

That's nice.
I probably get 10-15 tips a year. Usually around christmastime. I usually turn them down because I'm like supposed to or something officially, which, in my opinion, sucks as a policy, because well fuck.

fuck, i'd assume you get a free go with the wife or maybe an of-age daughter in that situation as gratuity. At least a handy from the man of house, if they're cheap tippers.

Wait was darko tailing about a cash tip?

In that case, no. I would not.

hey darko, can't you just run up the bill and split it with the owner? I figured that's how it worked.

 That'd be nice. Nah, man, I'm honest. The company has a published price list.

I always tip service men, usually $20.

You'll get the tip the moment you bend to work on the installation

First saw this at Chicago Bagel Authority on Armitage .

I think it is obnoxious to ask for a 20% tip when I am waiting for my food and all they do is hand it to me.

On the other hand I see why they do this because of the debi card everyone uses.

I would think a simple $3, $2, $1 preset option would be appropirate. Then the OTHER can be if they handle a large order or OTHER.

I enjyed watching the guy who said "where is the no tipping option?"

I didn't think of the debit card issue, that's a good point since you are talking about a place that asks you to pay in advance so its not liek you are going to hand someone your CC at the end of the meal and ask them to put $2 on it for a tip.

I agree that if the options were $3, $2, and $1 with other being the one where you can overtip I would not be offended at all.
