Yes, impart your wisdom so I can use it next time I'm in Cooper's Hawk.

Its OLD SCHOOL, no doubt

The International Room and the Cape Cod at the Drake both faves of my grandfather. He was going there for 40-50 years. You make the reseravtion, walk in, check in and the maitre D takes you to your table, he would palm the guy a $10 or $20 spot. Always had the table ready, always the same table, etc and almost always the same Maitre D.

Just not the same world these days. Highly doubt anyone is dining weekly or monthly at a place that even has a Maitre D.

Now, if you want a table at Hugos or Gibsons and you didnt make a reservation, thats a $50 minimum, but thats a different story.

Maitre D is not your host.

Like the high end hotels that you just had to mention you stay at not more than 24 hours ago on this board?

You are something else.

You might get to see a sex show in the parking lot. Could be worth it.

Cape Cod Frank! One of my dad's good friends who hung out with him at Bernie's all the time. He was the Maitre d at Cape Cod forever.

Sometimes throwing a little cash around out front goes a long way. I used to go to a big Republican dinner at Thirteen Colonies in River Grove every year. My buddy Jerry had to buy a table as fealty to his chinaman, Roger McAuliffe. Jerry would always hand a twenty to the Polish waitress who was handling our table. One year Jack O'Malley came over and asked me why we had so much extra beef and chicken.

Chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature.

What kind of gig did Jerry have? To my knowledge the only patronage grease the Republicans had in Cook County in the 80's/90's was the CTA.

He worked the portable scales and weighed trucks for IDOT. I don't think anyone knew how good a job it was when they handed it out. It's not like Jerry was a heavy guy, but he did deliver his precinct at about 90% for Roger.

You're damn right it does. Back in the day a young Scorehead went to a lot of shows & concerts. A $20 bill always got me a good table up front & great service at the Park West.
A few years ago I had a last minute opportunity to take a potential big new customer from Cleveland to dinner on a Friday night in Rosemont after a large trade show. Gibson's & every other good restaurant is obviously booked solid until 9:00 or so. I tell this guy that I have reservations at one of the best steak joints in Chicago so we go to Gibson's. They used to have a gorgeous blond bombshell who looked just like Pam Anderson who worked the check in podium & what used to be the Cigar counter. I approach her & introduce myself & ask her for a table for 2 but I do not have a reservation, & I hand her a $20 bill. She says one more of those & I can seat you in 5 minutes.

When you were younger you would throw around $20 for a table up front at the Park West?
When I was younger I stood 20 feet in front of you for free.
I still do.

Unless you have a physical condition, who actually chooses to sit down at a show if standing up front is an option?

Yes. Those tables were coveted. Who chooses to stand when sitting is an option? SRO is always cheaper.

Not when you're less than 5 feet away from the band playing.

Have you ever been to the Park West? Spanky isn't talking about standing in the back, he is talking about standing on the floor right in front of the stage.

Nobody "covets" the tables at PW. Every single table is behind the standing area there. Most people like to be closer to the bands that they like. I think.

How can tables be cheaper if you have to pay an extra '$20 bill' for the benefit of sitting there?

I said that SRO is always cheaper. Me & my crew liked the tables & the service, & not standing.

Real fans just watch on Youtube. Parking at Lincoln and Armitage is too much hassle.
