It is a bad bet because there are much better ones that Sox fans can make.

"better ones". that isn't the point.

the point is dolphin said one thing and then said the exact opposite thing to weasel out of his original statement.

 It's pretty clear you are just dug in here. I guess this is just one of those friendly $1000 bets between friends.

He probably could afford it but why would you not try and give yourself the best chance of winning?

The $1000 could easily be spread around....I had $600 of it taken by other Cub fans in seconds.

The fact is Sox fans know they wont have a a better record over the next 3 years and thus have provided every other possible reason why the bet has not been accepted. Which is OK.

It would be OK to say something like "I think my team is going for it this year and dont expect them to be good in 3 years"

IMO the $1,000 is too steep for a fun rivalry bet.

What about a multi-level bet like MJH used to do? HR totals for 3 players, pitching victories, etc in addition to total wins? That way you break up the money so that it's not all or nothing.

Im not dug in. People's finances and what they are comfortable with is their own business.

The yearly bets I make are a few hundred dollars usually. That's just me. I dont really bet on games so maybe its different

Right now, there are a ton of ways I could make more than double my money if the Sox have a better record than the Cubs the next three years. You know this too which is why you created this thread knowing no one is going to take the bet.

How about an even bet that the Cubs won't win the World Series in the next 3 years? You in? I'll put in the first $100!

No, it's not, Rick. Can you look at anything involving these two teams from an unbiased perspective?

He said he'd bet on the Sox being better over three years then amended it to "they'll be better for two years, but the Cubs might be awesome in year three and have more wins overall"

If a Cub fan did that you would reference it for the next 3 years

a few hundred with friends vs. $1000 on a message board is a lot different.

Exactly right by good dolphin.

It's almost like you don't understand the concept.

good dolphin has two options.
1) Take an even bet that the Sox will win more games than the Cubs over the next three years.
2) Bet in a way that will pay off much more than an even bet if the Sox win more games than the Cubs over the next three years.

Every single person would take #2. good dolphin's explanation explains one of the reasons he can make MORE MONEY by taking that chance. It's simple risk/reward.

Forget the betting aspect. good dolphin said he'd bet on the White Sox being better for the next three years. Then he said...Well they MIGHT NOT have more wins overall, because the Cubs might be super awesome in year 3.

You cant defend that sort of backtracking

And yes, if it were a Cub fan, you would make that your new Patrick Kane go to joke

Would only work in this argument if he declared the Cubs would win the world series in next three years then back tracked.

Which is why he could get more value by going against that then an even bet.

If someone offered me 2 for 1 odds on me hitting it you wouldn't get any action on that either.

I believe the Sox will have a better overall record than the Cubs over the next three years. I am certainly not able to put $1000 on it, but I will throw $50 down. The Sox have had a better record than the Cubs over the last three seasons as it is.

However, while I don't need any odds, I do think there needs to be some sort of weight given to playoff appearance(s), and even more weight if one of those teams happens to play in World Series over the next three seasons.

I would say $50 for cumulative* wins 2015, 2016, 2017
*play in WC game= +5 wins
Division Title= +10 wins (if a team won game #163, they get +10. If a team lost game #163, they get +5)
Pennant= +20 wins
WS title= +25 wins.

It's beyond bizarre that you conclude that those are inconsistent statements. Every bet ever made, even on a fixed game, includes that it might not happen.

I am still fully confident the Sox will have a better record over the next three years.

Well not 1k of confidence, somewhere south of that. Probably well south. Like New Orleans south.

If I lose that I'd have to pass the loss on to the customers.

Don't worry about the loss, it won't happen. Remember, the Cubs current major league roster sucks, and their minor league system is full of busts. This is a guarenteed win for you.

I know you guys are egging me on.

I ask you the same question, what is the last $1,000 bet you placed?
