I like him. As local radio guys go, there are much worse listens than Laurence Holmes.

I'm trying to think of how to put this without it sounding contradictory, but he's good as long as he can be himself and stay focused. For all the shit we give him here, he's actually quite good at the fundamentals of doing radio, and can put on an engaging sports talk show. But when he has to show off how cool he thinks he is, it's painful. When he kisses Bernstein's ass, it's nearly deadly.

That's a fair assessment. I'll add that I really hate the open to his show. Hate it. Especially when he's only filling 45 minutes between B&B and a Sox game. Dude, you have 27 minutes of talk time and you waste 5 on your "six callers ahead of us, Jimmy!" bullshit?

Oh god, I would hate-listen to Murph every day if he came back. Such a glorious trainwreck. He's like Les Grobstein on stupid-steroids.

I would put it slightly differently: Laurence is at his best when he's discussing other people's opinions--from the newspaper, various websites, etc--rather than attempting to formulate his own. Once he thinks he's being "original," he veers into the Bernsteinesque "histrionics of thinking" approach to radio that spells doom for him since he is incapable of thinking--or even producing a reasonable simulation of it.

A few years back, Holmes and Goff would be on-air together to close out (I think Goff's) late show. They were relaxed, and they gave pretty damn good radio together. Maybe it was because they have different but complementary views; maybe it was because they knew there were probably about 50 people listening. Laurence is the same way by himself. He's much, much better when he's relaxed and talking about something external than he is when he's staking out a position.

Anyway, I would definitely tune in to a Goff/Holmes show.

Craig deconstructed the late night genre to tell us how fake it all is. His autobiography, American on Purpose, is awesome.
