Right...but that doesn't help you understand how good these guys were in the 1970's. Watch the Golf Chanel for that. Golf is one of my passions in life. I love to play it, watch it & attend tournaments as often as I can. I certainly appreciate the talents of young players like Bubba Watson, Luke Donald & Hunter Mahan, but it's a bit premature to say that either of them is better than any of the players that I listed from the 1970's.
Listen, I can respect your love of the game; as you know, I cover golf regularly. But you are simply not giving these new players enough credit. Scores are substantially lower on average in comparison to decades ago. It is simply a fact.
I used my dad's old clubs from the 60's once - I almost quit the game for good.
Equipment is MUCH different now, especially the ball.
I can attest to that. 8 years ago I saw an ad for a
driving iron on TV. It was $90, more than I paid for my whole set. Well, being blind drunk at 2AM I ordered it, believing the claim that it would take 5 strokes off my game.
To my amazement it took 14 stokes off. Good Lord, I was in heaven. Of course, it all went downhill from there. My putrid slice soon returned. But I don't blame the club. BTW, every single golfer that saw that club wanted to try it out, and half of them offered to buy it from me.
At the time I was told that the club was not allowed by the PGA. I guess that it IS now, judging by this ad: ($90 was cheap!)
