BA ranked the top recruiting classes. LSU gets the top spot thanks to area players LHP Jake Latz (Lemont) C Mike Papierski (Lemont) and RHP Jake Godfrey (Providence) and despite losing top recruit LHP Mac Marshall to a late junior college transfer. Arkansas checks in at #4 (it's a real good class Hawger) . Big Whatever newcomer Maryland is a surprise at #20.

They will be fun to follow. RHP Keaton McKinney and RHP Johah Patten have Friday night stuff. OF Luke Bonfiled has a ton of talent and OF Jack Benninghoff is a big time gamer with good skills. My guy is SS Keith Grieshaber. He's a fantastic athlete (multiple soccer scholarships from top programs) with great size (6'2" 190). He has a chance to be a star.

Don't follow college baseball that close, but isn't Nebraska supposed to be pretty good in the Big ten?

Darren Erstad has done a great job with that program and they should be the conference favorite. He's had some very good recruiting classes and Sophomore OF Ryan Boldt is a star.

Here's the write up on Arkansas. Weird they have Greishaber as an OF. When I saw him he played SS and was really damn good.

ARKANSAS:

OVERVIEW: The Razorbacks have a history of recruiting at a high level, and recruiting coordinator Tony Vitello and the rest of the Hogs staff did yet another terrific job over the past year. Despite signing several highly touted prospects, the Razorbacks avoided major draft defections, getting studs such as righthanded pitcher Keaton McKinney and outstanding outfielder Luke Bonfield to attend college. The list also includes other highly touted prospects such as catcher Nathan Rodriguez , who spent the summer playing in a collegiate summer league, and righthanded pitcher Jonah Patten, who would've been a high draft pick if not for his tough signability. Bonfield had a terrific summer offensively in the Northeast, and showed advanced skills in the field, along with good speed and big-time raw power. Meanwhile, Rodriguez showed to be a very good defender in the California Collegiate League, while Patten is an impressive 6-foot-3, 195-pounder, who can get up to 93 with his fastball, along with a four-pitch mix that also includes a curveball, slider and changeup. The list goes on in terms of the talented prospects in this class, including outfielder Keith Grieshaber, among others.

Class jewel: OF Luke Bonfield (Skillman, N.J.)

The Razorbacks certainly expect big things out of the impressive righthanded pitcher in Keaton McKinney, but in terms of game ready at this point, you have to give the nod to Bonfield, who showed very well against college competition this past summer. Bonfield is a 6-foot-2, 185-pounder, who is very athletic, has good pop and just has an advanced and impressive overall skill set. He should be an immediate high impact guy for the Hogs come February.

d1baseball.com had a massive relaunch of their website and hired away the best College Baseball writers from BA (Aaron Fitt) and Perfect Game (Kendall Rogers) to run the site. There is a subscription but they will also offer tons of free in depth content. They rolled out their top 25 and broke down each team. Here is the breakdown of #11 Louisville. Lots of Chicago flavor on this team:

Louisville's Projected Lineup

Pos. Name, Yr.
C Will Smith, So.
1B Danny Rosenbaum, Jr
2B Nick Solak, So. (Naperville North HS)
3B Zach Lucas, Sr.
SS Sutton Whiting, Sr.
LF Colin Lyman, So. (Huntley HS)
CF Mike White, RS Fr.
RF Corey Ray, So. (Simeon HS)
DH Colby Fitch, Fr.

Pos. Name, Yr
RHP Kyle Funkhouser, Jr. (Oak Park- River Park HS)
RHP Anthony Kidston, Jr.
LHP Josh Rogers, So.
RP Zack Burdi, So. (Downers Grove South)

Hitting: 60. Though the Cards aren’t expected to be loaded with power bats, this is an offense that should be very productive, using aggressive baserunning, extra-base hits, and much more to get the job done. The athleticism throughout the lineup is impressive, with spark plug Whiting leading things off atop the lineup. Rosenbaum, Solak and Lucas give the Cards three talented and experienced bats, while the UL staff feels Lyman and especially Ray are destined to have very productive seasons. The Cards also have a pair of young bats to watch in Brendan McKay and Colby Fitch. McKay has good strike zone recognition, a good swing and potential gap power, while Fitch showed good plate discipline during fall workouts and has the potential to hit for a good average and power from the start.

Power: 40. The Cardinals could very well have some power production this spring, but it’s certainly not a given with some of their personnel losses. The Cards enter the season without 20 of their 32 homers from last year’s club, including hard-hitting veteran outfielder Jeff Gardner, who finished the year with nine homers and 68 RBIs. With that said, the Cards have some guys back with some pop. Solak has a flat swing with some pop, Rosenbaum and talented freshman McKay both could provide some pop, White and Ryan Summers have some power potential, and it’s a very safe bet Ray hits for more power than his one home run last season. The silver lining with this club is McDonnell’s teams always tend to hit doubles. UL finished the ’14 campaign 22nd nationally in doubles with 115, and perhaps the Cards can emulate that performance.

Speed: 70. It’s safe to say the Cardinals won’t lack athleticism. The Cards welcome back several key speedsters from a team that reached the CWS last year. Whiting is a spark plug in many ways, and is back after recording 43 stolen bases, while Solak and Lyman each had double-digit stolen base totals last season, too. Lucas and Ray are other athletes who run well, while the platoon guys in center field, White and Summers, are athletic and can make things go. As usual, UL should be a fun team to watch in this regard.

Defense: 60. Since his arrival at Louisville, McDonnell has taken great pride in having offenses and defenses that are versatile and athletic. That once again is the case this season, as the Cards welcome back several premier defenders. The middle infield should be stout this season with Whiting, who has good range and instincts at shortstop, leading the way. Third baseman Lucas is a versatile defender who can play all over the infield. The outfield is in good shape with Ray, a premier athlete, leading the way, while White and Summers display good athleticism and speed in the outfield. Though he still has room to grow offensively, the Cards also like catcher Will Smith, who’s athletic with good arm strength.

Starting pitching: 60. Though the Cards might have some question marks in some areas, the weekend rotation looks to be in good shape. Funkhouser has a chance to be the top overall pick in the 2015 draft, and has a big, sturdy frame, to go with nasty overall stuff. Funkhouser has a fastball into the mid-90s, and features a high-quality four-pitch arsenal, highlighted by his power slider. Fellow junior righty Kidston doesn’t have the same overpowering stuff as Funkhouser, but his stuff took a jump in the fall and he has two good pitches in his changeup and curveball. Lefties Rogers and Drew Harrington will serve as starters Nos. 3 and 4. Rogers improved toward the end of last season and showed a good slider and command of a solid fastball. Meanwhile, Harrington is up to 92 mph with his fastball, has a physical build, and has good command. No matter how the Cards set things up on the weekend, they should feel good about this rotation.

Bullpen: 55. Replacing Nick Burdi, Kyle McGrath and Cole Sturgeon in the bullpen won’t be easy, and it’s a reason this unit is a question mark. With that said, the Cards have some real potential with this group, and look for pitching coach Roger Williams to really have this group rolling toward the middle and last half of the season. Zack Burdi, the younger brother of Nick, didn’t have a huge role last year, but blossomed in the fall, getting up to 97 mph with his fastball, while also showing better feel for his changeup and slider. Meanwhile, the Cards like fellow sophomore righty Jake Sparger, who competes with three pitches, including a sinking fastball and slider combination. The rest of the bullpen roles still are very much up in the air, but this group has potential, and the Cards really like their group of freshman arms.

Experience/Intangibles: 60. The Cardinals definitely will miss some departed veterans from a leadership standpoint, but they are still in excellent shape entering the 2015 campaign. For instance, the Cards must replace one of the more fiery and dominant closers in college baseball in second-round pick Nick Burdi, while offensively, they must replace Gardner and two-way talent Sturgeon, among others. With that said, the Cards have smartly recruited over the past few years, and still return enough key cogs from a production and leadership perspective to get back to Omaha. There are no guarantees in college baseball, but McDonnell, as usual, will have his club ready.

D1baseball has a fantastic breakdown of the Big 10. They're projecting 4 teams to make the tournament (Maryland, Nebraska, Illinois and Indiana). Here is their breakdown of Illinois:

Illinois returns nearly every key player from a team that went 17-7 in the Big Ten last year and fell just short of an at-large bid to regionals. This should be a balanced team with tough outs up and down the lineup, a reliable defense and a stellar pitching staff. Anchoring the rotation is one of the Big Ten’s best Friday starters, Jr. LHP Kevin Duchene (4-1, 1.80), a strike-throwing machine who padded his big-game credentials in the Cape Cod League, pitching Yarmouth-Dennis to a win in the championship clincher against Falmouth. Duchene locates his 87-90 fastball very well to both sides and has added power to his curveball to complement his outstanding changeup. RHPs Drasen Johnson (5-7, 2.91 in 96 IP) and John Kravetz (6-1, 3.00) give this rotation two more rock-solid veterans with advanced pitchability, and the bullpen features several power arms, led by electrifying LHP Tyler Jay (1.94 ERA, 10 saves), who sat at 93-95 and touched 97 last summer for Team USA, while also flashing an above-average breaking ball and changeup.

The lineup features plenty of athleticism and good team speed, with CF Will Krug (.307/.360/.391, 20 SB) and SS Adam Walton (.329/.380/.423, 13 SB) setting the tone. The Illini don’t have a lot of home run punch, but brothers Ryne and Reid Roper figure to improve their power output this year, while OF Casey Fletcher (.308/.385/.450, 6 HR) and C Jason Goldstein (.316/.370/.435, 4 HR) each offer some pop as well. Goldstein is also a very dependable backstop who anchors a defense that should be strong. The Ropers, Walton and athletic 1B David Kerian should form a reliable infield.

Vandy is ridiculously stacked and easily the favorite but I'll step out a bit and pick TCU. They can really pitch and should hit enough led by Evan Skoug (Libertyville) who will be Freshman Player of the Year.

You of course have looked into it way more than me, but Vandy is now a powerhouse and looks to be in the middle of it every year. Looking forward to seeing my Hogs play and with the SEC Network there will be a lot of good college baseball on this year.

I've seen some pick the Hogs as an Omaha sleeper. They're young and could come together and make a late season run.

SECN isn't showing a game tonight. That's a little disappointing.

Yeah that sucked. There was a lot of good stuff this weekend. Illinois went 4-0 and only gave up 7 runs all weekend and that was without their #1 starter Kevin Duchene (they can really pitch). The Hogs played good too and your man Clark Eagan went ape shit. That would be HUGE if he has a big year at the plate.

Yeah I saw that, locally Wisconsin-Milwaukee took 3 of 4 from Maine and scored a ton of runs down in Winter Haven, FL. My son is going to workout with their assistant coach tonight.

That's awesome. I've heard good things about their coaching staff. They have a couple guys on that team. Hopefully they can stay healthy this year.

I just saw an upcoming schedule and it looks like all the games are on SEC+. I don't get plus. Just SEC Network.

Hawger, I see Cal canceled this weekend against Arkansas but they were able to schedule a series against Eastern IL. The game against Cal was supposed to be televised tomorrow on SECN. Do you know if they're still showing the game against Eastern or are they rescheduling to another game? This god damn weather is really fucking everything up.

I didn't even know they cancelled, and I wonder why they did.

Tight travel budget and the weather. I'm sure Cal didn't want to risk flying all that way to have the games canceled.

Well that's good. Eastern is awful but at least we can see some local guys.

That is the exact reason they cancelled, glad Eastern was available to play.

Figured. It's happening all over the country. Series are getting canceled or moved to other locations. I was supposed to go downstate this weekend but that was canceled too. This weather really blows.

It is good. The Hogs will pad their win total but might hurt their RPI. Eastern is really bad.
