I have to give Pynchon credit. I thought the first 2/3 of "Inherent Vice" were breezy, lightweight claptrap, but he apparently set me up.

Any other insights for us tonight???

Here's the thread for when nothing happens tomorrow. I had to make the thread early, lest someone gank my sweet reference

Funny how Jay Z and Joe O are replying to the Bernsy comments while the man himself remains silent. He didn't even retweet Sharp's comments about exploring legal action. He won't even say anything tomorrow, what a pussy.

But DFW was from the hard core racist South of U of I. Something stinks here.

Is is possible that DFW hung himself because Dan made fun of him for playing tennis and being fat? I'm not saying, I'm just saying...

Maybe Dan should think about his departed "written-letter bud" and what he'd think of how the show has become a sneering celebration of authority and a den of vacuous lawyered-up gossip.

Zawatski has not defended Bernstein at all, he has left Bernstein alone to defend his own comments. He cant really attack him. Repsect Jay for not being in the ALS.

Ostrowski and Rongey really licking the shaft.

Zawzer would never delve into personal rumors or criticize the Hawks organization for off-ice dealings. He hosts that Blackhawks Miller Lite show. He wisely doesn't want to risk that pay given the shit money CBS pays producers.

hmmm bernstein loves DFW? so if he were to sign up for a message board it would stand to reason he might pick a nickname based off of a story by his "written letter bud" something catchy.... maybe the girl with the curious hair?

/me fans the flames of the old 09-10 rumors that CURIOUS HAIR + DAN BERNSTEIN = MATCH

how did you ever live that one down anyways? i would have taken it and ran with it.

SIGNED,

NICK FRIEDELL.

btw i remember some years ago that bernstein was talking about "tortured genius" something like "so smart it hurts to be alive" or something.... was he talking about DFW there?

You think Dan is aware of the shift? If anything he thinks it's just shifted to more important news

Yeah, I think so. I remember a time when he was talking about the realities of depression by way of David Foster Wallace's suicide and how mere existence had become too painful for DFW. Goff said something ignorant like how brothers don't commit suicide because white people are trying hard enough to kill them. The argument didn't go anywhere fruitful from there, as anyone who's broached the issue with IMU can attest.

I had no idea Dan was a DFW correspondent, or even a fan, when I joined the board. I was going to start a thread about how DFW dropped a reference to listening to Bears postmortems on the Score in his 9/11 essay, but I thought he was talking about Doug and OB. I remember when the Mitchell Report came out back in '07, Bud Selig made some remark about how he was intending to read the whole thing but hadn't gotten around to finishing it yet. Dan said something like "Yeah, Bud said the same thing about Infinite Jest, too" and it was a real holy-shit moment for me.

Knowing everything you knew about Bernstein and it was still a holy shit moment?

I would think liking DFW would seem to fit

I'd only been listening to the show for a year and it was before there were daily blog posts and Twitter feeds to digest and discuss. I don't think I knew that much.

Though come to think of it, someone used to write in to Who You Crappin' as Don Gately.

Cancel all other discussion. Cancel all guests. There is only one topic for today(and likely the next 2 years).

yup, he's already tweeting about it. Nice excuse to talk about this as opposed to the consensual sex of Patrick Sharp.

Bernstein's column today was the usual Bulls front office asskissing we've all come to expect. Apparently Thibodeau and by extension Van Gundy should simply never criticize or even disagree with the all-knowing GarPax because the Bulls hired Thibs out of the goodness of their hearts.

The Bernstein Brief: What’s Jeff Van Gundy’s Deal?

CBSChicago.com senior columnist
(CBS) First Jeff Van Gundy uses his national pulpit in January to accuse the Bulls of undermining his friend Tom Thibodeau, causing general manager Gar Forman to seek him out and tear him a new one at halftime.
Then he reveals to a reporter that Thibodeau’s agent asked him to tone down the campaign against Bulls’ management, and he admits that he needs to be careful about appearing to be a mouthpiece in Thibodeau’s well-documented cold war with his bosses.
So what happens Sunday? Van Gundy delivers a prison-shank to the ribs of executive vice president John Paxson, describing the aftermath of the previous incident with, “He was so mad at me I thought I had traded LaMarcus Aldridge for Tyrus Thomas and not him.”
Ouch, dude.
There’s nothing wrong with an analyst having strong opinions and standing by them, of course. He’s entitled and empowered, and it’s better than the usual blandishments that burble from that seat. But Van Gundy should be more mindful of something else.
Nobody wanted to hire Thibodeau until Paxson and Forman did. After many years and multiple interviews for head coaching jobs, Thibodeau was identified as too single-minded and too weird — his lack of social skills a deal breaker. Until the Bulls looked past that, valuing his work ethic and tactical expertise.
And it has succeeded to the point that Thibodeau will have another job whenever this is over, which many close to the situation believe will be at the conclusion of this season, due largely to what gave teams pause years ago.
Taking a risk on a guy and giving him the opportunity to make a name for himself as a head coach is a far cry from undermining him.

He's ok, but he can get way too preachy sometimes from his seat. But, the ESPN/ABC broadcast has improved since they brought back Mark Jackson to the 3rd chair.

It's funny when Van Gundy does a college game. He basically spends the whole game saying "They should do this just like the NBA". I don't even know why he is there.

ESPN does an announcer swap every so often where they send Dickey V to an NBA game and Van Gundy to a college game.

The best is when Van Gundy gets mad when a travel is called in college when a guy clearly took three steps. It's only the actual rule on what traveling should be!
