More 890 news, as Robert "Local Blogger" Feder is reporting that Cumulus wants Rush Limbaugh off their Chicago airwaves. Local Blogger added that Cumulus denied it, which means they definitely want him gone.

http://www.robertfeder.com/2015/03/05/w ... -limbaugh/

Quote:
Rush Limbaugh, who’s been a fixture on WLS AM 890 for more than 25 years, is about to get the bum’s rush from the Cumulus Media news/talk station, sources said Wednesday.

If all goes as planned, Limbaugh’s syndicated talk show, which airs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, will be dropped by the end of March, according to insiders at WLS.

A Cumulus Media spokeswoman declined immediate comment. But a source familiar with the decision said it was based on the show’s diminished ratings and failure to generate advertising revenue for the station, adding: “It’s impossible to sell.”

Thursday morning update: A Cumulus Media spokeswoman is denying plans to drop Limbaugh from WLS. “This is not at all accurate,” she said. “Any report to the contrary is false.”

Limbaugh’s departure would continue the overhaul of WLS’s lineup, which began in November when Steve Dahl replaced Roe Conn and Richard Roeper in afternoons. In January, Big John Howell replaced Bruce Wolf and Dan Proft in mornings. And late last month Jonathon Brandmeier was signed to host a syndicated show that will replace John Kass and Lauren Cohn from 9 to 11 a.m. Once Limbaugh is dropped, Brandmeier’s show is expected to air for its full three hours — from 9 a.m. to noon.

A 27.5 percent decline in revenue at WLS — from $13 million in 2013 to less than $9.5 million in 2014 — was a contributing factor in a change in top management last week. Peter Bowen was named to replace Donna Baker as vice president and Chicago market manager. Overall the market was down 10 percent last year.

It is not known what WLS will air from noon to 2 p.m. Nor is it known whether Limbaugh will turn up on another Chicago station. When Cumulus Media dropped Sean Hannity from its stations last year in favor of Michael Savage, Hannity’s show moved to Salem Media news/talk WIND AM 560.

Limbaugh has been on WLS since the station launched its news/talk format in August of 1989. For many years the conservative radio icon was among the top-rated stars in middays.

The latest Nielsen Audio survey shows WLS ranked 24th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays with a 1.5 percent share and cumulative weekly audience of 121,300. Among listeners between 25 and 54 — the group most sought by advertisers — WLS tied for 31st with a 0.8 share and 47,300 weekly cume. For the full year 2014, 62 percent of Limbaugh’s audience was over 55, and 34 percent was over 65, according to Nielsen Audio.

In December 2013 Cumulus Media dropped Limbaugh’s show from WABC, its news/talk flagship in New York. Along with Sean Hannity’s show, Limbaugh moved to rival WOR, owned by iHeart Media. At that time, Cumulus Media signed Limbaugh to a three-year extension through the end of 2016 on its other large-market stations, including WLS.

Those numbers I boldfaced are buh-rutal for the guy who was AM talk radio in the 1990s. Of course, it's not the 1990s anymore, now is it. I don't think they'll get rid of him by the end of the month, but no way in hell he makes it to the end of 2015, let alone 2016 when the contract with Premiere ends.

Conservative talk radio as a mainstream format has to be on the ropes here. WIND and WCGO (whatever that is) might be able to keep it going in some enfeebled state, but it's not getting it done for the Big 89 anymore.

Rush was interesting from something like 1991-1993.

That's the way to properly get someone off the airwaves....don't listen or don't use products of advertisers. It didn't take a balanced air-time law, but the market decided it. I also might be more inclined to believe that this is just a sign of the death of a medium as well. Conservatives today might be more inclined to get their info from a podcast or a blog rather than listen to the guy their parent's listened to. No research just my humble opinion...

The Sandra Fluke incident was the turning point. Go back and read the transcript. It's kind of chilling.

Yes, it was an attack that didn't need to happen. If he would have just made a point about some people wanting others to pay for their birth control it would have had the same effect with the base. No need to go after somebody as he did...attack the belief not the person...

So, conservative talk radio is dead.

So, how does a dead medium with little influence get the Governor of Wisconsin elected?

See, I said here, as in the Chicago radio market, and then pointed out two stations of smaller stature where the format could continue, but not on a 50,000-watt clear channel.

As for WTMJ and WISN getting Scooter elected, we've all heard the jokes about entering Wisconsin and setting your watches back 20 years.

So 2 talk show hosts got a Republican elected in a blue state 3 times.

You're so full of shit, the shit is his oozing out of your pores.

Perhaps you attained your education from some sort of trade school? I dunno.

I believe Rush's ratings are done. I do not listen to him or Hannity. I think they experience the same as all talk radio. Same thing day in and day out. It is getting old with so many other choices.

Lot of advertisers don't want to be associated with that garbage. There are only so many at home prostate testing companies and the like.

Dahl is gonna have worse ratings though. His show is shockingly bad.

My Aunt is going to be so disappointed. I think she is in love with Rush.
Apparently he had a TV show for a time in the mind 90's. She has them all on tape. She still watches them.
"See... he was right about Bubba".

Things she's said to me...

"You're in a Union. EEEhhhhggg, you're not gonna turn into one of those LEFTIES are you??"

"You know why Quinn will beat Rauner? The blacks"

"Did you listen to Rush yesterday? He's such a smart man."

"You know what I'm tired of paying for? LAZY people"

I have faint memories of a "Rush Limbaugh" cell in the TV Week grids, but I've never seen it. I'm sure youtube has it. Could be an interesting time capsule.

Yeah, the creepy Sandra Fluke rants killed his advertising base with Premiere. The only sponsors left on conservative talk seem to be the ones for why we need gold and silver for the impending financial apocalypse (what about canned goods?), or my favorite, the @reagan.com email address for people who think Hotmail and Google are too socialist. Taken as a whole, they show so little respect for the intelligence and humanity of their listeners, they make the Score look like WFMT.

And that's just on the syndicator's side. I don't think I'm going out on a limb in saying that the "source close to the situation" who told Feder WLS can't sell Rush's airtime is the sales manager who has to confront this reality every day.

He definitely had a 30 minute TV show. That's where I first saw him in college around the 1992 election.

Political talk radio is the same as sports talk radio except marginally better hygiene.

Oh man, you're full of shit . Very little, if any, self-awareness in you.

Get a god damn grip on your surroundings, brohammer.

If you are, in fact, being serious with this then you're farther gone then I originally thought. You're completely exposed.

Take care, please.

Near the top, for sure. You can't argue with what he accomplished and the impact he had on media for years to come.

That being said, it does bear mentioning that ABC was inches away from pulling the plug on WLS-AM's talk format all the way back in 1994, the Angry White Male ostensibly not being common enough in a liberal area that's been working out its neuroses about minorities since before radio was invented. It wasn't until the O.J. Simpson trial and Roe Conn's coverage of it that 890 really capitalized on not only AWMs but a much wider base of listeners. Like I've said before, the station lineup that I remember best was never wall-to-wall conservative: they had screaming leftist loons like Jay Marvin and Mike Malloy, Roma was always kind of a moonbat, and I wouldn't exactly call Roe and Garry hardliners.
