This may have been a joke but my experience with Pepe's is all over the place. If you find a good one of the location with a great bartender it is a jackpot. Other ones might suck. I grew up drinking young and eating on 63rd west of Kedzie location and was very happy.

To answer the question I seem to remember a ton of good Mexican joints from said area above sw through oak lawn to Orland, Tinley and beyond.

When I was a kid there was a restaurant on Paulina just north of Howard called La Choza. It was run by a Oaxacan dude named Sylvester. The had great moles. Every Rogers Park and Evanston person loved this place. Also, they weren't very strict on underage drinking. You could bring your own beer and nobody said shit. We were seventeen.

Anyway, they had this dish called "kamoosh". I don't think it's a real traditional Mexican dish. Kamoosh certainly isn't a Spanish word. I guess Sylvester may have made it up. It was just chips on a metal dish covered with beans and guacamole and cheese and then stuck under a salamander and topped with sour cream. You would order it by the number of people. Like kamoosh for two or kamoosh for four, but you always ordered extra. if there were four of you, you would get kamoosh for six. That shit was awesome.

The closest thing that you can find to kamoosh is the garnachas from Pepe's.

I've heard that's good, but never been. We liked Aguameil in Clarendon Hills for a while. it seems to have gone downhill lately. We are looking for a good one too.

What's that food/restaurant board some of you guys belong to? They gave good reviews and stuff.

Jaliscos in Aurora is good. Mrs. Scorehead and I frequent the one on Rt 31.

Lots of great little Taco dives in Aurora.

Not sure if connected but I used to go to a Burrito Jalisco in Orland area before I left a lot.

Yerbabuena is expanding. Good place. I like Mago too.

I was enjoying Zapatista in Naperville but I'm not sure they didn't close for good. Their fajitas were great and I'm not really a fajita guy.

You could go across the street to Coopers Hawk!
Great lettuce wrap app and Bloody Marys.

Mason Sabika is legit. Tapas bar. I worked in Naperville for six years but never found too many good Mexican places.
