If the Canucks get Calgary in the first round, they'll win that. They're not a bad team at all. I'm surprised how well they bounced back from the Torts fiasco last year, which I thought for all the world had set the whole organization back about five years.

NHL postseason roster rules aren't like baseball's; your whole 50-man organizational roster is eligible provided the organization held each player's rights prior to the trade deadline -- this means that Paliotta, who wasn't on the 50-man roster but had been drafted by the Hawks, is eligible; that Baun guy we signed out of college last week is not.

That being said, while he'll be on the roster, he sure as shit shouldn't dress for any games. It sounds like van Riemsdyk is hurt again, so he's probably out. Rundblad sucks. You're basically looking at Kyle Cumiskey to not be awful or to take a canyonesque leap of faith with Paliotta or Johns. Personally, I'd cast my lot with a Timonen-Cumiskey third pairing and hope they just don't have to play very much. Manage 2/4/7's minutes down the stretch so that they can take on maximum minutes in the playoffs and try to allocate the minutes roughly around 29-23-8. We won a Cup rotating Jordan Hendry and Nick Boynton in the #6 slot. Of course, we were loaded everywhere else.

Beyond brutal. Once again, Bowman has erred on the side of retention with an old player: Rozsival, Handzus, Boynton, and Mayers all contributed and then hung around too long and sucked. That's not even getting into one-shot deals like Fernando Pisani, Andrew Brunette, Brendan Morrison, and Sean O'Donnell, who were dead on arrival.

We might have to add Kimmo Timonen to that second list if he doesn't find another gear in the playoffs. Eek.
