Lets not get too revisionist history-ey here.
Butler came into the league during a lockout season with little training camp, and was on a team with a very deep bench (Bench Mob). There was no spot for him to play, and he probably didn't deserve to crack an already deep rotation.
Mirotic was terrible at the beginning of this season, like stunningly bad. He looked completely lost on the floor and was embarrassed on the defensive end regularly. He was racking up a bunch of fouls in limited minutes. He didn't deserve to be out there either until he figured out not to foul someone on every possession.
Doug McDermott is just bad. He doesn't deserve to be on the floor, and GarPax should have sent him to the D-League after he got back from his injury.
It is assumed that Butler was not ready to play because Thibs didn't play him. Just like it was assumed that Mirotic was not ready to play because Thibs didn't play him. Yeah I will grant you the foul thing but guys don't turn it around that fast without being ready to play in the first place. Even in Butlers 2nd year Thibs really didn't play him much. Once Deng was injured people thought it was a big loss until Butler began playing and people began to realize that damn this guy can actually play.
Thibs gets a pass too often in these situations. He uses the rookies aren't ready to defend garbage every chance he gets to justify not playing them. Hinrich should only play if Rose or Brooks out but he continued to play him alongside Rose when Dunleavy was out. Hinrich has been terrible all yr. He has received consistent playing time.
