Mrs Newper is turning 40 in May and we have planned a long weekend out in Manhattan because she has always wanted to see a Broadway production... I've already got tickets to Wicked so I'm covered there. Any suggestions for things that I should go see or eat while we're out there? We're staying basically in Times Square and I know she wants to have a NYC bagel, a NYC pizza slice, and she likes coffee shops.
Also other non food/drink/smoke suggestions are good too... we're going on a boat architecture tour where they go around Manhattan... she's into that sort of thing, not so much a party hard thing or a intellectual modern art museum thing.

Of course there are a million great restaurants in Manhattan, but my favorite little Italian place is Lanza's in the East Village. It's at First Avenue and Eleventh. The place has been there forever. The neighborhood is quite different now than it was when I first went there in the 80s. Back then you could buy crack right outside the front door.

Anyway, when you walk in there's a huge table with all kinds of appetizers on it. Every single one of them looks fantastic. I've eaten here many times and I've never had a bad meal at this place. And they have the best New York cheesecake you will ever eat.

Another place I like to go is Marchi's at 2nd Avenue and 31st. This place isn't for everybody though. It's decidely old school. I can see the modern diner laughing and saying "what the fuck is this place?" It's in an old brownstone and there is no sign. It's like eating in grandma's apartment. And I'm pretty sure that's how the place started out back in the 30s. There's a set menu, no ordering. Everyone gets the same stuff. It's an interesting experience to say the least.

hey newps, now i'm obviously not going to have the high end suggestions since i'm me and all that, but for that authentic slice of new york pizza i'd make the trek over to penn station in midtown manhattan (34th/8th st.... you gotta see how the madison square garden is built into it too. maybe the rangers are still going when you get there but springtime is quiettime for sportstime in "the mecca") and do rosa's pizza. now if you ever ended up at marisa's pizza in chicago/northbrook then you've had pretty much the same thing, and yes it can be argued that being in the middle of a giant train station (long island railroad = metra equivalent) isn't the most inherently 100% new york thing, but this city is designed to route your tourist ass into one of like 3-4 pizza places that are going to be filled with tourists anyways so i'm telling you where the beer is cheap and you can be like "holy shit they have armed military personnel walking around this place"

central park is overrated too. wow there's some woods in the middle of a city? how sheltered ARE these people? why cant they leave the city and go to the woods? you'll find out that a pastime amongst indigenous NYC people (especially the transplants who ruled armpit, NE with an iron fist before they stepped their game up in the big city) is talking about how great NYC is. be prepared to tell them about chicago because their worldly asses have never been here (john hodgman has a great piece on "the mythical lost city of chicago" in one of his books. it nails what i'm talking about)

i've also found that aimlessly walking around manhattan in any direction tends to help you find places that might not have paid off the publication/s you looked at to find out where to go. there's so much shit there that has to be at least some level of quality to pay those rent prices that you just have to have no fear and go around and figure it out your own damn self if you want anything remotely authentic. good luck!

I'm no expert, been there a handful of times. My advice would be to go out an about just to see the sights. Take the subway here and there. The whole place is pretty mind-blowing. I've been up in a skyscaper office and the view was just unbelievable.

I was thinking about Seinfeld references particularly.

btw for the bigfans of the world who have no idea what i'm talking about, here's john hodgman's thing on the lost city of chicago. you gotta scroll up a page or two to get to the start of it.

but yeah he totally nails new yorkers view of us en masse.

If you have the time, go to the Statue of Liberty. It's just something you got to do.

it's been many years since I have been there so I cannot offer any suggestions.

Put me in the "I hope to never, ever have to set foot within 30 miles of Manhattan ever again" camp.

Hope you enjoy it, though.

A long weekend may not be enough time so I'll put them in order of what I would do.

1) Comedy club. Best part of NYC. Any of the well known ones are good. Avoid the ones that hand you tickets on the street. Comedy Cellar is the best. Comic Strip Live is really good too and sometimes has free or discounted tickets($20 of drinks required but that is pretty standard). Caroline's is good if you want to see a famous comedian and pay more for the privilege. The shows after 10pm are normally better because it is (edit:) not filled with dumb tourists who get offended that someone said the f word and talked about testicles. The 8pm shows are fun though.
2) Broadway play(which you already have)
3) Statue of Liberty and/or WTC museum. Both are well worth the visit, and somewhat close to each other. The WTC museum takes about 2 hours, so you could go to that in the morning, eat in the area, and then head south to get to the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. We ran out of time to do Ellis Island, but that is included too.
4) Go to Times Square, figure out it sucks, walk through Hershey World, and then get the hell out of there.
5) Go to the Carnegie Deli and get food to go. There will be a long line. That is for people looking for tables. You can walk up the counter and take it to go. Central park is only about a 10 minute walk from there and has a ton of seating. You can buy a drink from a vendor there. These sandwiches are massive. You can split one. My friend and I split a pastrami and neither of us finished it.
6) Since you mentioned smoke, Club Macanudo is pretty good. It's a high end cigar bar. Probably should be dressed moderately nice. Food is really expensive and I believe you can bring your own cigar in for $10 or buy one from them. I was there for lunch and I walked in. Expect a large bill. I think I had $17 nachos but they were good.
7) Walk around the lower section of Central Park. Take a tour on the horse drawn carriage if you feel like having a good experience for a lot of money.
8) Go to Little Italy for lunch/dinner.
9) Check out the Brooklyn Bridge. On a nice day, it is well worth the visit.
10) Check out a rooftop bar, pay $10 for a drink, get a nice view of the city, and then find some place better to enjoy yourself.
11) Walk into Grand Central station. It is a very nice building.
12) Go to the Intrepid Museum(this would be higher if not for your first visit. It is great, but it really isn't a NYC type of thing)
13) Go an event at Madison Square Garden, which in my opinion is pretty overrated.
14) Walk the high line(This one should be higher as on a nice day it is really good, but ultimately you probably don't have time). It's basically a raised garden walkway that used to transport product from the meatpacking district.
15) Top of the Rock/Empire state observation tower. I preferred the Top of the Rock, but you pretty much know what to expect here. Look at the buildings! Ok, you hungry?

For restaurants, I highly recommend a place called Hell's Kitchen, which just so happens to be in Hell's Kitchen. You'd need reservations until after about 730 when the theater traffic goes away. Porterhouse New York on Columbus Circle is good if you are a steak guy. I'm really not and it is expensive. We really like The Meatball Shop which has multiple locations. There is a place called Pam's Real Thai food which is great and fairly inexpensive. There is a burger place called Burger Joint in the Le Parker Meridian hotel that is pretty cool. Everyone loves Shake Shack, but it sounds like you can get that in Chicago soon. If you want to save some money, take a look at a website called Gilt City. It's like a NYC centric version of groupon that has some good deals.

It's really hard to go wrong with food though. Just keep in mind in your area that there is a massive amount of pre-theater reservations. Don't expect to walk in and get a table near Times Square at 6pm. Make reservations.

the difference between me and brick is that i've actually played a show in manhattan despite not being an actual musician/dj/rapper/whatever.

trust me when i say central park sucks and it's a big dumb thing for people who are too up their own ass to leave the city and go to the actual woods. kind of like shake shack.

I would include a visit to Yankee Stadium, but I'm not sure if the new building is a must see.

I have heard the Staten Island Ferry gives you a great, close up view of the Statue of Liberty without any lines. Take it to Staten Island and stay on the boat for the immediate return

You are right. Skip Central Park. Go to a horrible train station for pizza instead!

After that, why not stop at the bus depot for some tacos!

I really enjoyed Central Park. I stayed in a hotel across the street from it for a very reasonable price. I'm not saying to tour it for hours but hanging around for 1 hour is fun. There is a lot of great architecture off the park.

I think Ellis island/Statue are worth the wait, especially Ellis. It is pretty much a part of the history of all of us.

hey at least you dont have to make a reservation and pay $17 for nachos. but then again i'm the type to befriend ppl on the bus in bedstuy and wander around under the tracks picking random places to sit down in and drink our "juice" before i sleep on a basketball court in williamsburg for an "authentic" NYC experience, or at least you tell yourself that after every $200ish/night hotel in the area was full. indeed, i had $320 cash on me too so i was kinda hoping i had to wake up and defend myself, but c'est la vie. i did end up patching up a nasty fight between a lesbian couple at like 4:10 in the morning so things worked out the way they were supposed to.

and the point i'm making with the pizza place is that we've all had new york pizza before at some time in our lives, you dont have to go out of your way to some damn tourist trap to overpay for it and then tell yourself you experienced the real thing. IMO going to a train station like that gives you a look at some of "the combine" that dude went on in that one book...... oh what's it called? one flew over the cuckoo's nest? devalidated.

but then again newper is prolly more in line with your way of thinking so i guess reservations and paying $5/minute for air in manhattan is the way to go here. seriously manhattan is designed to eat you alive from the wallet outwards, so just be warned that if you're not fairly clever everything is engineered to stick you with a huge bill. this is of course no concern to the bricks of the world cuz slap a little mortar with him and it's possible for the world to exist.

Good call. I've taken everyone who has visited here and they all liked it.

The return trip gets a little bit boring but it is a good subsitute if you don't have time to do the Statue of Liberty.

Wall Street is also worth a visit to waste some time. The ferry, Wall Street, WTC, and the ferry to the Statue of Liberty are all within a moderate walk from each other.

I don't understand the problem with doing touristy things when you are, in fact, a tourist.

The best theater in NY is not being done on Broadway but its Broadway, so you go

touche, you definitely have a cromulent point there. still, maybe it's a me-thing but i just wanna go see what a city's actually all about and not what they want people coming into town to think they're all about.

Cool. I highly recommend visiting. There are some things that really suck about it, and make me glad I don't live in Manhattan, but it truly is a great place.

the difference between me and brick is that i've actually played a show in manhattan despite not being an actual musician/dj/rapper/whatever.

trust me when i say central park sucks and it's a big dumb thing for people who are too up their own ass to leave the city and go to the actual woods. kind of like shake shack.
You are right. Skip Central Park. Go to a horrible train station for pizza instead!

After that, why not stop at the bus depot for some tacos!

Thanks for all the suggestions, especially BRick's post. I like the ferry shortcut -- I remember as a yout going to the Statue of Liberty and we didn't even bother going up in it because the lines were so long. Also will try your recipe Chus... I've been only using 1/2 oz vermouth so I'll add the extra quarter and let you know if it makes a difference. :)

It is a pretty cool thing about this board to be able to ask questions like this and get the feedback you were looking for. Kudos to you CSFMB.
