So mr. dildo, does this specific horse in 2015 have a shot at winning the Triple Crown? I understand that he is the only one who has a chance. But that does not mean he really has a chance, got it?

I don't see who can beat him in Baltimore. Maybe that Commander horse of Pletcher's that won today.

Competitive Edge was the horse I meant. He might be there in two weeks. Pretty impressive yesterday.

I think it is a good possibility that either Dortmund or Firing line could win the Preakness

I read that Dortmund may run in Preakness. I figured that Baffert wouldn't want that, but the owner wants another shot at AP. That would probably be the easiest Trifecta box ever. Let those 3 slug it out and hope with one with the higher odds win.

Dortmund was empty as expected even after setting moderate fractions.
Trakus had him moving at 33.7 mph the final segment which was slowest of the top 9 finishers.

I was surprised to see Dortmund get on the front end, but withMateriality breaking a step slow, I see he had no choice. He left well and there was no speed inside of him

I've read a lot of guys talking as if the pace was a crawl and I wouldn't agree with that exactly. Yeah, it was on the slower side, but 23.2/47.3 was honest enough going a buck and a quarter. But if he was really a great horse, he certainly should have held on after that. I think the distance shortcomings on his maternal side kicked in at the 16th pole.

I think this group as a whole lost a little luster after the race. And I'm not sure Materiality won't prove to be the best of the generation before it's all over.

Baffert saying that he had a "minor colic" about a week prior to the Derby....so if he ran that well a week prior to a bout with colic, imagine if he were in perfect condition????

He's gonna blow'em out in the Preakness, watch. Will get to the front and not look back.

The pace wasn't a crawl but he really was coming home slowly off of that pace. From the start when everyone was fawning over his "incredible comeback win" against Firing Line the numbers told a different story. He just isn't that fast down the lane. The winner traveled 69 feet further than Dortmund. Convert that to lengths.

The pace wasn't hot but he never really got a breather. Someone was on his hip the whole way around.

Yeah, I know AP had a wide trip, but it was relatively easy. He sat right off Dortmund and Firing Line as they slugged it out. I think the track may have been slower for the Derby than it was earlier in the card.

My thoughts on race times are similar to my ideas about the W/L records of starting pitchers. You don't often see a horse get passed a full length at the eighth pole and come battling back. Regardless of how fast or slow they might be going, that's impressive and it speaks to the guts of the horse.

I know Baffert doesn't seem to mind a horse that goes out to the front every time, but that's the hardest way to go. Dortmund seemed like a versatile animal, but if you stick him on the front too many times in a row, he probably isn't going to want to do it any other way.

OK the horse battles which is a good trait as some just quit.
But in taking a crtical eye to his overall ability he just isn't that good compared to what he is thought to be.
The numbers didn't lie.

what is 69 feet?
about 8 lengths?
that is a lot in a game with many photo finishes

Wouldn't count out Carpe Diem, if he runs, in the Preakness. It will be a sprint between him, A.P. and Firing Line.

I enjoy hearing the different voices and styles of the various track announcers. And we've got a good one at Arlington, John Dooley. http://espn.go.com/horse-racing/blog/_/ ... 2-3-dooley

He can be really funny with his comments and voice inflections. This past Sunday the way he called "Love You Mon," a horse in the 8th race, cracked me up. And I recall a few years back a horse at Arlington named "King Rootentooten." He pronounced it exactly as Curley would   http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1cp2m ... y-xvid_fun

And in winter excursions to the OTB Fairgrounds is one of my go-to tracks in part because Dooley winters there.

I've never been a fan of announcers with foreign accents- Denman, Wrona. Can you imagine going to Royal Ascot or Newmarket and the announcer sounding like a superfan? Having those guys call in the U.S. is just as silly.

As a guy who learned racing at Sportsman's Park, Gil Levine will always be special to me. But my all-time favorite might be Larry Lederman, who called mainly at Atlantic City and Freehold.

JORR, I love Wrona! As you know, I've only gotten into horse racing the last 2-3 years, so I did not know that Wrona was doing Chicago races for a while....I wonder why he only does Golden Gate?

I like Dooley and Denman as well.

I also like Ed Burgart at Los Al when he does the 4 1/2F races.

Going to miss Durkin, but he was starting to get older and mess up a little.

Off the three-quarters in one twenty-five and four, that's the Mudge's Nero on a short lead, Pepper's Skipper on the outside in second, and out in the middle of the track that's Mr. Dalrae and he's modockin'!

My funny story is with Tony Salvaro. I'm 17 and at our high school's night at the races at Maywood. My friend's aunt is friends with Tony so she gets us up in the booth for a race. So before the race we start asking him stuff about how calls a race - does he memorize names, drivers etc. He tells us how he handles a race - basically that the horses arent moving so fast that he can't use his program while calling a race. So anyway, it's some crappy claimer race and we're talking betting and he likes our picks so we ask him how he thinks the race will set up...He looks at the program and says the 7 horse will leave hard from the gate. We don't see any speed on the PP's so ask him why. He says Claude Spann will drive like he stole something which puts a little grin on Tony's face. As the post parade comes around, we notice Claude Spann is black and sure enough the horse leaves.

Tony had a good laugh about that.

Also one other Tony Salvaro story - in the offseason, he could typically be found in one of the boxes at Maywood betting the other tracks. He also liked to bet on other sports (legally of course, I'm sure). One night he is screaming at his box mate about a game and all we can here is "Why the fuck are we betting on Rice in basketball? I don't even eat rice!"
