I must have driven to half a dozen table cloth type restaurants last night with lines out the door. I ended up at a little place with a few tables called 4 Hermanos. It wasn't anything fancy but I ordered pretty much the same thing I would have ordered at the other restaurants at a fraction of the price and no real discernible difference in quality. I'm starting to think Mexican restaurants are like Greek diners, all owned by one family and all serving the same food.

Don't bring a Bayless into this discussion. Those guys are the most closeted dipshits the world may have ever produced.

if you cant tell the difference between your run of the mill cheap mexican food and pricey yet incredible mexican food you aren't ordering the right items

there are various types of Mexican restaurants:

1. expensive and good: very rare
2. expensive and bad: fairly common
3. cheap and good: where Mexicans go
4. cheap and bad: where gringos go

Is Four Hermanos that place across from Leaning Tower Y? Not a bad breakfast there.

I went to a Taqueria on 22nd and Western last night.

I've had much, much better tacos at any run of the mill Pepe's.

I'll put the Pastor tacos at San Juancito up against any cheap mexican place on the northside.

I wouldn't talk crap about Bayless though, his place did just get named best mexican restaurant in the USA. That's kind of a big deal.

Why? I'd like to go to frontera or topolobampo. The food from his show is fantastic.

I like going out for Mexican. It's too much work or too expensive to make at home.

Tacos are easy

Enchiladas are a pain in the ass.

A good Carne asada is top notch and pretty simple.

Out here in the boonies, if you haven't checked out Salsa Verde in either St. Charles or Yorkville, you're just missing out.

I think I told you why? If you don't like my rules, make your own Mexican restaurants thread.

This place is good, but in kind of off the beaten path:

Frontera is more fun than Topolo. Quite a bit cheaper too.

I wouldn't know as I don't go to restaurants where the chef feels I should be honored to eat his food.

I met him once and his wife a different time. They seemed pretty likeable. He's a big nerd with an odd passion who somehow struck it rich.

i've been to XOCO a few times. it's definitely tasty and fresh/quality ingredients, but pricey for the portion size as you might imagine

La Roca , in Nogales Mexico, before going to Nogales meant border wars at night, this was our spot for a summer. 5 minute drive and we ate like kings for 10,000 pesos= $3.33!!!!

I still defer to la pasadita as my go to tacos & burritos...only the Ashland location as everytime at Irving park, I make a simple order and always seems to be an issue in the kitchen even when very few people are there,

PRO TIP: if you ever go to Mexico and go to a 'fine dining' or nicer place, they do not rush you out. They want you to relax, eat drink, order more food, more drink...etc.. they usually have big comfy chairs, but they dont rush the food out to you and a 2+hour meal is normal. Even if you enjoy Las Tablas on Lincoln Ave, they do the same thing. They dont expect you to get in and out. Dont be the obnoxious gringo asking "Where is my food?"...order another drink and shut up. (Yes, I know Tablas is Colombian)

My new favorite Mexican joint is Jaliscos Tacos on Rt 31 in Aurora. Great great food at a reasonable price.
