I still defer to la pasadita as my go to tacos & burritos...only the Ashland location as everytime at Irving park, I make a simple order and always seems to be an issue in the kitchen even when very few people are there,

PRO TIP: if you ever go to Mexico and go to a 'fine dining' or nicer place, they do not rush you out. They want you to relax, eat drink, order more food, more drink...etc.. they usually have big comfy chairs, but they dont rush the food out to you and a 2+hour meal is normal. Even if you enjoy Las Tablas on Lincoln Ave, they do the same thing. They dont expect you to get in and out. Dont be the obnoxious gringo asking "Where is my food?"...order another drink and shut up. (Yes, I know Tablas is Colombian)

My favorite place to grab a taco dorado in Aurora is Jalisco tacos which has a few locations. Sadly this place named after the great Mexican state that gave us Carne en Su jugo does not offer it on their menu. They do however have some pretty damn good goat consomme on weekends. They claim the al pastor is their specialty but there's better to be had around town. What I like are their taco dorados with deshebrada aka heavily spiced and shredded beef. The combination of crunchy shell (freshly fried) mixed with the juicy beef makes for a messy taco that you have to eat right away but are rewarded with some great flavors when you do.

I've been to Salsa Verde in Yorkville. Good stuff. Haven't been in awhile. You might have given me a lunch idea Don Tiny, Thanks

I will never understand why the hell people go to On The Border & Chipotle when there are so many great authentic Mexican restaurants in the Chicago area.

Because people who eat at Chipolte and On The Border aren't looking for authentic Mexican.

i know a few people who simply think those places are "cleaner" than your typical mexican kitchen/restaurant.

On The Border is just fucking dreadful. I'll very occasionally eat Chipotle, but I don't consider it Mexican. It's Mexican in the same way McDonald's is a hamburger. Their virtue lies strictly in familiarity and consistency.

And I don't want my taqueria to be too clean. Just like I expect a good old Cantonese style Chinese place to be kind of grungy. Like Orange Garden on Irving and Lincoln. There's a place on Elmhurst Road near North Avenue, I think it may be called Jade Dragon. I'm not really sure though since my partner and I just call it "the clean Chinese". It's an exception to the rule.

I'm a fan of Garcia's in Lincoln Square, and I hit up Pancho's in the 'burg.

This...although I don't consider OTB dreadful, it's not great, authentic Mexican. It is passable...but places like this get the "authentic" consideration from people who don't have anything near them but the national franchises that call themselves "authentic". My wife and I will go to the OTB in Vernon Hills on occasion, because she likes the food, but where she's from, everything is a franchise. An authentic Mexican place won't fly in Western Michigan. At least they have beer.

Chipotle sucks...especially since they don't seem to have carnitas anymore.
