i never thought he'd be this good. he was predicted to be an above average player. he's really exceeding expectations by being a FAR SUPERIOR player.
Me too. I thought the Votto comparisons were far over reaching but he's getting pretty close. Fucker battles his ass off at the plate. Of course id love to see this keep up for a full season before making any grand pronouncements but he sure seems well on his way.

I haven't been a fan (I thought the tough guy persona was forced), but he's really starting to win me over not only with the bat but also with the D. Last night, the pop-up bunt he let fall--so he could turn the double play--was awesome.

Having Bryant around has really made a difference. I think they feed off each other and this should be a lot of fun for them both for years.

Clear leader of the team is a better call...

It is why I am giving Theo inc so much credit...to go get a guy for that purpose is projecting more than just talent...which is hard enough.

The guy has dealt with cancer, visits hospitals regularly without fanfare and has perspective I wish I had. He and Bryant are exactly the kind of guys you build a team around.

never even gave that a thought. I like Addison Russell a lot, but he is not really a leader type. Seems pretty quiet. But he plays the right way and can be a leader by example. But Rizzo and Bryant get it on and off the field. Listen to either in interviews. Watch them both signing tons of autographs before games. watch how them play the game. They are leaders. Great to have more than one. but for marketing purposes, the fact they are white has to be a plus. The vast majority of fans that purchase tickets, as well as jerseys and other things in the shops are predominantly white. So having a team with Rizzo, Bryant, Lester and Arrietta leading the team, is not a negative.

Very possible he finishes this game with an .1100 OPS. It's Mid-May. Unreal.

Over 1.300 OPS in the last two weeks. Beast mode.

Jose Abreu has a .703 OPS in the last two weeks.

Abreu is half as good as Rizzo.

I like Addison Russell's game. He is a cornerstone. He may not have the leadership abilities that Rizzo and Bryant have, but he's a player and will be a big part of Championships.

This based on Stone seeing that Abreu ALREADY UNDERSTANDS HE NEEDS TO SHORTEN HIS SWING WITH 2 STRIKES and Rizzo has one swing and it's a homerun.

Sounds like Stone found his new Cub guy to whip, now that K Wood is done.

My nephew is 9 and he shortens up with 2K's, he must have quite a future.

One day I will give Mr Stone his quote and he will say "I dont remember saying that, but if I did, what I must have meant was......"

This is just Cub fan silly talk. Like when Derrek Lee was "better" than Pujols for about half a season.

According to Fangraphs, Rizzo is tied for 11th in batter WAR with Russell Martin, Jose Altuve, and Matt Carpenter.

Personally, I'd have more fun viewing a lineup of 9 Altuves than 9 Rizzos.

Except for the fact that Pujols was probably the best player in baseball in that stretch and Lee was just having an great stretch as a veteran. It was VERY clear that Pujols was the MUCH better player and any talk of Lee being better was silly talk.

Abreu had a great year last year, but seems to have come back down to earth this year, and he is no where near the level of Pujols. Rizzo is playing great this year now as a younger player. Neither have proven themselves over the long haul.

The Abreu and Rizzo discussion is a much better discussion than anything regarding Pujols and Lee. To have an opinion that Rizzo is better than Abreu right now is no more silly talk than it was last year to say that Abreu was better than Rizzo.

Last year: Abreu > Rizzo.

This year: Rizzo > Abreu

It is pretty reasonable right now to have an opinion either way for who will be better going forward.

but he is 5,th in OFF behind Harper, Nelson Cruz, AGon and Goldy..... Altuve is 20th and Jose Abreu is 62nd...yor beloved Carpenter is 11th.

Sure, but my post wasn't even necessarily about who is the better player or having the best season (by fWAR at least- which is a counting stat), more about how aesthetically pleasing it would be to watch 9 Altuves in the plate and field. Rizzo would probably be better at 1B and.. pitcher, maybe... that's about it.

The origin of the thread is the bitter Steve Stone comparing Rizzo to Abreu.

So, I think JORR needs to have a conversation with Mr Stone and ask why he felt like comparing Abreu to Rizzo, when he pulled into the parking lot and saw 1 swing by Anthiny Rizzo and projected an entire career on it.

Stony is a terrible talent evaluator. which makes you wonder if anyone really has a clue. or is it just his deficiency.

"I think that means that Lou doesn't have a great grasp on what to do with young players," Stone said in the interview. "Because with Tyler Colvin, if you take a look at what he has accomplished in a short period of time, with limited play, you realize that he very well could be the one thing the Cubs have been looking for for six years. That's a left-handed run producer. Colvin could be that one guy. But he can't do it on the bench, so you make a decision that you play the guy."

"And Steve Stone, he's got enough problems doing what he does with the White Sox," Piniella said in the home dugout, his voice raising. "What job has he had in baseball besides talking on television or radio? What has he done? Why isn't he a farm director and bring some kids around? Why isn't he a general manager? Why hasn't he ever put the uniform on and be a pitching coach? Why hasn't he been a field manager? There are 30 teams out there that could use a guy's expertise like that.

"He's right," Stone said. "I've never managed. I've never been a general manager. I've never been a pitching coach. But I'm in my fifth decade in this game. I think I have the right to have an opinion."

Stone was asked by ESPN Chicago if Piniella is acting out of frustration.

"I can't look into Lou's psyche. I don't know," Stone said. "I do know he's getting $4 million a year to manage. I get paid to broadcast on Comcast SportsNet and WSCR radio. I have two TV shows and two radio shows a week. I also get the MLB package, and I watch a number of games every night. I spend my winter in Arizona watching the Arizona Fall League and seeing young kids from everybody's system. I go to all of spring training and make my way around various camps.

"I've seen more baseball players than Lou has. I just haven't managed them."
